We just got a 3 month old cat from the SPCA 2 days ago (12/11/12). We gave her dry food when she got home around 8pm. She ate a little bit, I figured that she had probably already eaten and wasn't hungry. The next day (12/12/12) she still wasn't eating so we got her some canned food. She ate a little again. This morning (12/13/12) she took a few bites of the canned food. At dinner she still wasn't eating. Our meal had ground turkey in it and we gave her some of that. She did eat a little. More than she had been eating, but not as much as I thought she should be eating. I tried giving her some tuna and she didn't eat that either. I bought some milk replacer, but I didn't give her any yet because I wasn't sure if a 3 month old kitten should have it.

Ever since she came home she has been very clingy, never wanting to be away from us, always sitting with us and sleeping in our bed. Also, yesterday and today we were having repairs done to our siding because of damage done by the hurricane, she didn't like all of the noise. So I think she is still unsure of her new home since it has been so noisy the past few days.

What can I do to get her eating something? Also, how much food should a 3 month old kitten be eating each day?

Try warming up the food a bit and add a little bit of water to it to make it the consistency of oatmeal.  Warming the food helps entice the aroma and might help get her eating.  Also, can you find out what kind of food she was eating when you adopted her?  Get some of that and see if that helps.

We check with the SPCA already, they uses all different types of food, whatever is donated. So she may have been eating many different foods before we brought her home. I'll try warming it and mixing it with water to see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi there. Welcome to TCS! Your cat is a cutie.
I think she is not eating much because she is still a little nervous in her new home. Can you find out what she was eating at the shelter and try feeding her that ? It's important that she eats soon. Although it's not the best quality food there is, a lot of cats find canned Fancy feast irresistable. Try the classic chicken flavor. It's high protein. Try a topper like parmesean cheese or cat treats to get her eating. You could  give her some cat milk to get some nutrition in her. If you give her people food make sure it doesn't have onions or garlic.

You could also try a Feliway diffuser. Much cheaper to order online. They mimic a mother cat's pheromones and might help her feel safe.

Kittens eat a lot of food. Mine were on wet food only and ate about 9 oz. a day when they were kittens. This amount will vary though. Good luck with your new baby.

Also, you might want to sit on the floor near her while she eats.  That might help her, too.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. She did finally start eating well after a few days. She likes Fancy Feast grill chicken and turkey best. She is very particular, she won't eat the Fancy Feast classic, or any other flavors. That is fine with me as long as she eats.
