My cat, Bo, is one of those picky eaters. He currently eats several flavours of one brand- Merrick (Turducken, Grammy's Pot Pie and Thanksgiving Dinner). If he does eat other brands, it is with one of these flavours of Merrick mixed in.
I am concerned with recalls. Merrick doesn't exactly have the best track record of quality control but this is literally the only wet food my cat will eat. He eats Halo chicken, Weruva chicken and duck flavours, Natures Variety Instinct ( rabbit, chicken, and venison flavours), sometimes Wellness (mostly rejects it). He will only eat these brands if they are mixed with Merrick... if I go to give him one of these brands without mixing, he refuses to eat it. I leave it for long periods but I don't want to risk affecting his liver or his glucose levels as he is middle aged-senior.
What would I do in case of a recall? IF there was a Merrick recall, all I could see happening is me putting him back on kibble which is something I DO NOT want to do.
I have also tried raw. ALL of the tricks I know how to do. Everything everyone on here has suggested... this is my hundredth (feels like it) thread I have started on my cats fussiness and I'm starting to feel very down trodden :(
Any suggestions? Please tell me I'm not a bad cat owner :( :( :(
Also- has anyone heard of any recent Merrick recalls or of a site that is kept updated on cat/dog food recalls? Thanks so much...

You're a great cat owner to keep trying and for being so concerned for your pet's health!
:sigh: I know how frustrating it is to have a fussy cat. With getting Wiggies to get more wet food I must've bought every single brand of canned food I could find. And then you get one he likes and he suddenly won't eat it anymore!!! Right now what's working well for us is topping small amounts of wet with crushed freeze-dried chicken breast. He gobbles it up, and if he stops I put on another spoonful (I'm using a 1/4 tsp spoon). I just give him small amounts at each meal and then he gets a different brand of kibble.
I totally agree with using different brands as much as possible after all these recalls of pet food over the years. I feel it's a good way to hedge your bets.
Does anyone know of a recall website?

Especially for fussy eaters, it can take quite some time to transition to raw. I know you've been at it a week, but there are cats that have taken months - some a couple of years to fully transition. I don't mean to discourage you, just point out that it's like an introduction between new cats. Some people expect a new kitty and an old kitty to get along together in a few days or a few weeks, and it can take a few months or a year. :dk:

But you're a great kitty mom, and doing your best! You've just got a difficult kitty to work with when it comes to eating.

As to the recalls, if you sign up for emails at http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com, and http://www.ibdkitties.net, these sites seem to be the quickest to be on top of these things.

Oh, Bluebo, I know JUST where you are coming from.  I've got a couple of extremely picky eaters myself.  And one day they will love something, then the next suddenly they won't like it anymore.  So just be warned that some morning you may get up and your darling Bo may go on strike even with the Merrick!  But you said he will eat other food as long as the Merrick is mixed in?  Have you tried mixing in less and less Merrick, so that eventually there is more of the other food than Merrick?  Or sprinkling crushed kibble on top of the other  canned rather than  mixing in the Merrick.  These are the very same tricks to use for converting to raw.

If there were a recall and he was truly only eating the food that was recalled, there is a kibble that some of us raw feeders actually keep on hand for emergencies (like vacations when we can't find backups to feed raw).  It's  Epigen 90 made by Wysong.  Kind of hard to find, don't know the availability in Canada, but it's definitely a fantastic food, for kibble.  Pricey, but worth it in a pinch.
