My Mother in law lives in a basement apartment in our home. Yesterday I came home and she told me that my cats killed her birds.
She had 4 zebra finches that belonged to us, but we gave them to her because the cats were tormenting them.
I managed to save 2 birds and get them safely into another cage. She told me she just let the cats in to visit and left them alone for a few minutes. :(
Question is, now of course the cats are eager to finish the job and run downstairs whenever possible and wait by her door.
What can I do? Any advice would be great

All you can do is either add more containment so the cats cannot come in contact with the birds again or rehome one or the other.  Putting predator and prey together is not safe obviously and stressful on both and you can't really expect to change the situation to where the cats will be safe around birds.  I have several animals that never interact for this reason.

I agree they should be separated.  You might try a trick to make them think the birds are no longer down there.  Take the birds somewhere else completely and let the cats into the suite.  Let them look all over, high and low for those birds, and hopefully they will conclude that the birds have gone and lose interest.

I'd secure the birds better.. place the cage where the cats can't get at them.. and make sure it's secure just in case.
