Political campaigning

What do you think is fair in a political campaign? Ontario is currently in elections mode. I wish that the parties would just stick to the issues. I really hate it when they base their campaigns on candidate bashing. One party called the leader of another party (in an e-mail that was leaked) an evil kitten-eating reptilian alien. IMO that has no place in an election. Please can't they just say what their party believes and what they will do!

That is probably the best description of politicians I have ever seen!

I dread the mud-slinging that will soon begin the the US presidential election. I truly hate the misuse of the press and the fact that politicians have learned to speak in sound bites rather than in paragraphs. It is hard to tell what they believe when they speak in 30-second snippets.

Also, the incredible distortions of the facts that happen during campaigns is so disheartening. It becomes impossible to tell the truth behind the stories. It all makes me tired!

No, really....tell us how he really feels! LOL Hey, at least they said "kitten-eating" as a BAD thing! LMAO!!

I agree with Renae, and you Ady. The mudslinging does absolutely nothing to tell us about the candidate, but I think that's what they want. God forbid they talk about what they will do, besides innane promises that they won't have the power to keep. Unfortunately the public, at least in the US, has gotten so used to choosing the lesser of two evils that the best they can do is show how much worse the other guy is.

It would be nice for ANY candidate to talk about their position, instead of just bashing the other guy. So far Howard Dean is ahead in the polls because he bashes Bush better than the other guys. (At least that's how it appears to this Republican! )

Heidi, that's how it looks to a liberal democrat as well.

The democratic candidates had a "debate" last week and refused to debate each other at all. Instead they spent the whole time dissing Bush. (not that I didn't chuckle a few times at what they said) Having listened to them, I am no closer to deciding who I like than I was before they all began. sigh.....

On the bright side, calling someone an evil kitten eating reptilian alien took a little imagination. Out of idle curiousity which side leaked it?

Someone on the side that wrote it! (PC party of Ontario). Personally, I listen to what they say and I will not vote for someone you spends all of their time slinging mud. There are 2 parties (Green Party and the NDP) who haven't been slinging mud, but there is no Green party candidate in my riding and the NDP person in my riding doesn't actually live in the area. I think they should live in the area the run in. Maybe I should run for politics - it pays well and you get summer off. The pension is good too.

You would do well, because you are not a kitten eater. And I don't think you are an alien from another planet.

My blood is boiling this morning. I live in the middle of a city, which is obvious from my address and postal code. This morning, TWO copies of the guidelines for safe water for non-municipal water service owners were delivered. These are 200 page books. Published by the Ministry of the Environment. Just imagine the expense. I am not an owner of a non municipal water service. I would imagine that they have a database that includes all of those people. I'm not on it.

Want to bet that soon in the election campaign we will hear about the fabulous initiative to ensure the safety of our drinking water? That xxx guidelines were distributed? I want to call someone and yell at them.

Now how did I miss that in the news!

I totally agree with the mud slinging. I try to stay out of politics, it just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. I hate when a candidate will run around a question and won't give me a solid, fact based approach on how he/she will help the Province.

The people who are doing this bashing are doing more harm than good to their campaigns. Personally, I don't like any of the parties and don't believe anything they say. They say one thing to get elected and then do another once in office.

Sure one can vote for a smaller party (ie:Green Party), but it's a wasted vote IMO. To make your vote count, you have to vote for one of the front runners, but first you have to decide which one is less grimy than the other.

It's a tough decision in this case!

Sammie5, check your PM's!

I worked for the City of Toronto and the Ministry of the Environment and I became so outraged by the wasteful spending. I was part of an office that was closing and they had valuable books and resources in a warehouse that they were just going to destroy. Another student and I put together a database of organizations that could use these resources and we personally handed them out to libraries/environmental groups/low income schools etc.

At the City of Toronto, my committee was involved in recycling initiatives. The reason that twice a week pick up in rich areas remained is because one councillor threatened another councillor with future action if twice a week pick up was banned by my environmental group. So, we have more waste because councillors are throwing tantrums like school children in the playground and playing political backing games. Yeah, we have a huge waste management problem, but don't expect City of Toronto to do anything about it. They will just try to keep trucking it to someone else's backyard.

(sorry.....venting went a little long there....back to the scheduled Political Party Bashing discussion)

Ooh, I can vent about government waste. And this does have to do with the election, because they are throwing around accusations about the other not knowing how much their campaign promises are going to cost, and where does the money come from.

Friends of mine in high school, many years ago, worked in a government surplus warehouse. They were in charge of destroying material in the warehouse. As in, the boxes would come in, be inventoried, and then sent to landfill. Surplus like clothing from prisons that was last year's style. And work boots from the military that no longer met new government standards.

They quit, they were so disgusted.

Here is the latest about the kitten eating comment from cp24.com
Costly Comment

It may be the big joke of the campaign so far, but Ernie Eves says it’s been blown way out of proportion.

The Tory leader is referring to last week’s news release from his camp that called Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty an “evil, reptilian kitten-eater from another planet.â€

The quote is being partially blamed for the Tories’ recent drop in the polls, as the public responds to what’s seen as negative campaigning. Eves has tried to shake off the comment, with little luck. In Ottawa on Wednesday, he tried once again to explain the circumstances. In a radio interview, he said all three campaign offices routinely banter back and forth, and the comment was just a response to one from the Liberals saying he was in favour of nuclear disaster.

So instead of taking a low-key approach, someone in the Conservative office decided to fire back with a zinger. Eves acknowledges it was inappropriate but says people should consider it in the proper context.
