Benadryl for cats?

Hi, I'm new here and I have an important question to ask.

You see, I'm moving this Thursday and I need a way to transport my cat safely from point a to point b. I asked one of my friends about Benadryl, and she said that she's given it to both of her cats before (only one capsule) and they were fine. But, I need more opinions on it before I go through with it.

My friend said that I could get one of the "un-screwable" capsules, that you can pull apart, dump the medicine into some milk, and get her to drink all of it and that she'd be fine on the ride home. But... I'm not sure what to do.

Any opinions on whether or not this is safe enough to do as a one time thing? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. ~

I can't say for Benadryl but one of my cats was on ChlorTabs for years for allergies. My Vet recommended them and assured us it quite safe for cats. She did sleep a lot - if that is your goal it may work. I just shoved the pill down her throat. I tried hiding it in food - hopeless. I know of people giving dogs Benadryl but have not heard of anyone giving them to cats

You may ask your Vet for some kitty 'valium' or something stronger if a long trip is anticipated.

Do not give human medicines to cats, even in small dosages - they can kill. Can you call your vet and see if you can get anything?

Cats are better off NOT sedated when traveling. Sedation is very dangerous. The cat is already in a stressful situation, then you add this medicine that can cause even more anxiety, reduce respiration and heart rate..it's just not wise.

The ONLY thing I would recommend would be something like Rescue Remedy, which can help calm a cat but does not sedate. Just rub a little on her face and in the upper part of her ear flap.

Install a feliway diffuser at the new home before you even get there, to help her acclimate.

No drugs.
