Our cat Pretty (5 yrs) has Early Peridontitis. We had no idea, neither of our cats let us brush their teeth very much. They get a little angry. So we were wondering if anyone has had to have tooth extractions for their kitties and what that's like and a rough cost of the surgery. We don't want her to have any issues but our newest puppy just got fixed and Pretty had shots and whatnot. Our "babies" are expensive!

Help!

Pets do cost a lot more than just their food....

You need to ask your vet for a quote for a dental, and ring round some others as well if possible.

I have a very good-value vet in the UK and it was about £90 for my cat to have a dental including 2 extractions.  That was everything, and he recovered very well and now has lovely sweet breath.

If your cat will eat raw chicken wings they are the business for keeping her teeth clean, unfortunately many cats think they are deadly poison and won't touch them.  Whatever, do NOT give cooked bones of any kind.

Yes, I have had cats who have had extractions. Cats usually recover from this without any complications. Pain meds for a few days (do NOT accept metacam/meloxicam) is sometimes needed.

Cats are the masters of hiding pain, so don't blame yourself for not knowing. Most cats have mouth pain for a long time before they begin to show symptoms, if ever. A professional dental cleaning under anesthesia, with the extraction of any teeth that need it, will make her feel much better.

Dental disease causes other diseases, such as kidney disease and heart disease, if not taken care of. Make a list of questions for your vet about issues such as

pre-op bloodwork (yes)
IV catheter during the procedure (yes)
type of anesthesia (I recommend sevoflurane, very safe and fast acting)
pre-anesthesia sedation (not needed if sevoflurane is used)
type of pain med, if needed
type of antibiotics, if needed

Welcome to TCS and let us know how your kitty makes out.

One of my cats had five extractions done at one time and she did very well.  I brought her home that evening and tried giving her canned food but she wanted her kibble.  She did come home on pain medication.  It wasn't cheap but I think my vet tends to charge more than average for this area and my area is higher than some other areas of the country.  If I remember right it came to around $1500.
