Hey everyone!

I'm really excited about being a part of this great cat-loving community! I'm a huge cat fan and its really nice to see that I'm not just a crazy cat lady :p

Let me introduce myself!

My name is Jennica I'm a french-canadian 22 year-old cat-lover and i've had my best friend Gary for nearly two years now. He is an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING cat. Ive had so many cats in my entire life growing up but ive never seen any cat quite like him. My mom surprised me with him when he was 4 months old that she got from some weird lady giving away a litter of kittens. Ive always had a soft spot for blue/gray cats and she got me exactly that!

At first, he was extremely afraid of everything, especially people, and noises. He would always hide under my bed and it would take hours before he would come out. I lived alone at the time and I was the only one he trusted. I was really getting annoyed with him being so anti-social. After a couple of months we spent a LOT of time together and became best friends, but he was still so afraid of everything and absolutely traumatized of my mom more than anyone!! Im guessing he remembered her for the fact that she took him away from his mommy. He was totally fine and super cuddly with me when I was alone but he didnt trust anyone else. Eventually I started having a lot of parties at my place and he was introduced to a lot of people and noise. I then started dating a guy who would often sleep over and he quickly started trusting him also. Finally I had some hope that he wouldnt always be a scaredy-cat. My boyfriend at the time was really a great therapy for him, he gave him extreme affection and would spend several minutes talking to him softly upon arriving at my place that reassured him and made him feel comfortable to come out. After a while he started really enjoying my boyfriends company and eventually started associating all guests with love and affection! He would come out even during noisy parties with tons of music and loud drunk people! He even liked being picked up and pet by total strangers! I was so proud of him. He became a great host! Until about 7 months of age, he was never really noisy, he was rather quiet and calm. I'd say about around the time i had him neuteured, he started becoming very vocal. He talks constantly to me throughout the day. I can have endless conversations with him and he never gets tired of me. He follows me absolutely everywhere! I can't even go to the bathroom without him meowing outside the door!! I'd have to say hes kind of obsessed with me. Sometimes when I'm talking to someone he practically meows over our voices. He even sits at the table with us and talks! It doesnt bother me at all, in fact i enjoy talking to him and playing with him etc but my new boyfriend gets very annoyed with him because he can go on and on for a really long time and when I take a shower he HOWLS loudly. I'm a bartender and he knows my daily routine, and he associates my showering with me preparing to leave from 5PM to sometimes 3:30AM. My boyfriend gets mad at him a lot and it kind if upsets me. Gary is simply talking to me like any person would, he just happens to have a rather annoying voice :p Gary is extremely intelligent and loves to play with me. He just requires a lot of affection/attention. He ALWAYS comes when I call him, we play fetch and tag together nearly every day and he absolutely loves being brushed and massaged! He even loves when i spank him a bit, hahaha! He respects but is kind of afraid of my boyfriend so he never sleeps in bed when my boyfriend is there but the SECOND my boyfriend gets out of bed, he comes running to lay next to me and cuddle. He has had such a drastic change in character from the way he was at first to the way he is now. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with him and I forming a strong bond at the beginning and him trusting me completely that he feels safe as long as I'm around no matter who is around. He isnt even afraid of my mom now! I'm not sure how he acts when I'm not around, but I'm certain that I could never give him away. I think he would become really depressed.

People dont believe me when I tell them he used to be anti-social and scaredy. He is often the center of attention when people come over because he is just so involved with whatever I'm doing.

I love my boy so much, he really feels like my big baby boy to me! But I have a question that i've been wondering for so long! People ask me every time they come over but I never know what to tell them! Everyone is always shocked by his huge size and his social character. He is a whopping 18lbs, he is NOT fat, hes just very long, tall and massive. Maybe you guys can help me figure out what breed he is and/or ressembles? You can see in my profile picture how hes rather large. He's COMPLETELY gray/blue and has orangey-yellow eyes. He has rather large ears and a somewhat pointy head but not nearly as pointy as a siamese. I've looked up on russian blues but he doesnt have the characteristic green eyes and quietness. I'm guessing he's a mutt but definately some strong roots of some breed because where would he get such a talkative character?

So there's the story about Gary and I! I'm anxious to see your replies and read some of your experiences!

Hi Jennica... What a gorgeous boy!  I watched your video - he is an absolute character and I can see why you are smitten!

Generally on this site people don't comment on breeds so much. Unless a cat comes from a reputable breeder he/she will be described as a domestic.  That said, I am just about positive your boy has some Russian Blue in him.  I have two Russians and your Gary really does have 'the look'.  Also my girl is a very light, elegant cat, but my one year old boy is so heavy!  A very solid kitty.  Also Russians really bond with their owners and follow them around quite a bit.    He won't be pure Russian, of course, but I'm just positive he has some in him.

Thank you for sharing, and welcome to TCS!

Gary is a beautiful boy. His coat loks like you could bury your face in it like a comfy pillow.

I had a 22 lb red tabby boy. He was a big lovebug, would sit in the kitchen window and people would slow down just to look at him. (This was a very small town.)

I had been living in Kansas City, MO, before that, and he was not shy or skittish. I became friends with a lady that was heavily involved in animal rescue, puppy mills, and bad cat breeders. She knew a lady that worked in advertising that had been looking for the feline face of a premium national brand cat food for 3 years, and the pics were just what she wanted. The cat that had that job was getting old, and he was sick, so he was retiring.

We arranged to meet at my house in his own environment. She came to the door, I let her in and had her sit down, and he went insane! I picked him up so he would not run outside past me, and he acted like we were killing him. He ran under my bed howling and screaming, and would not be budged. She looked at me as if I was from another planet, asking "what made you think this cat would behave for anyone else when he won't even behave for you?" I was so embarrassed. They were going to pay him $75-$100 for each photo shoot, all the cat food all 4 of mine could at, and if he was really good, they were considering him for change jars to collect at stores and vet's offices to be donated to rescue, keeping seniors with their beloved cats by by helping with food and vet blls.
