At 7:15 this morning (it's 7:40 here now), I was bound and determined to bring my cat into the vet for an emergency visit when the office opened at 7:30.  I had seen no sign of poop from her for a couple of days which is never a good thing.  So yesterday afternoon I gave her a bit (1/8 t) of miralax and watched her very closely.  No poo.  She spent last night in quite a bit of discomfort that I interpreted as indicating pretty bad constipation.  I worried about fecal impaction in particular, given how long it had been since her last BM.

But then, at about 7:20, the miralax seemed to do its job and she passed a pretty substantial BM (that was a bit soft, as to be expected with the miralax).

But there is no sign at all of her passing any impacted/hard stool.  Does anyone have any idea if it could be still in her?  Or is the passing of a pretty decently sized BM good evidence that she's got things in working order again and I can call off the emergency vet visit?

FWIW, my cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes and I've just started her on a regimin of insulin with associated glucose tests.  I'd like to avoid the vet if possible, since that would throw our schedule into whack and could raise her glucose levels from the stress.  That said, I very much want to get her in if there's a chance that she could still be constipated.

Thoughts?  Advice?  (And my thanks!)

It's very unlikely there's an impaction. When a cat is able to evacuate anything when there's an impaction, it's typically a very water diarrhea-like elimination that is able to make it's way around the impacted stool. With a substantial, basically normal BM, this lowers the likelihood of an impaction being the problem.

Hi LDG - Thanks so much!  It was a proper BM, not just a small bit of watery poo, which makes me hopeful it's not an impaction.  I'll take a look at those links right now.

Have a great day!
