I came to the site last week regarding an issue where I thought my kitty might have urinated on my bed (for the first time ever!!) but wasn't sure because he was also having vomiting issues and the spot came clean in the wash, no residual "cat pee" smell whatsoever.  Well that was 2 Thursday's ago and this past Friday I ended up taking my kitty to the vet because he spent Thursday vomiting 5 seperate times and one time it was very pink, obviously it was blood.  Shockingly he made a pretty good recovering just before the vet appt. and looked great to them at the time because he had eaten and drank and kept it down.  All they ended up doing was a thorough external body exam and she said she could feel nothing out of the ordinary but took blood to get a full workup.  Came home, Friday night he ate some pate food and we all went to bed.  Saturday morning, 5am the vomiting returned.  Vomited several times yesterday but strangely at times acts fine.  Still plays, still chases the other cat.  He started refusing to eat yesterday all together but did drink water a few times.  Late Saturday night he did drink some tuna juice and I was happy with that.  I slept on the couch with him last night and woke him up at 5:30 to see if he would eat.  As soon as he smelled the food he went to the tile and threw up, just a tiny bit of juice.  Refused to eat all morning until about noon when he decided to lick on some tuna juice and even ate about 3 little slivers of  the tuna.  Then around 3pm I offered him some food again to which he went to the tile and threw up again.  After that he finally went to the litter box and poo'ed for the first time since Thursday morning and it was 2 big "logs" (for lack of a better word) that were very black and slightly green with a very different odor, almost chemical like.  About an hour later he ate about 1 tsp of some wet cat food with gravy and then ate the same amount again around 5pm.  Again, walks around the house at times, big open eyes, meows, plays with strings, and jumps in the window to look out.  Of course he has his moments where he just lays there trying to rest comfortable, but still appears to not feel well.  Now at 11pm he is back to acting like he wants to throw up when he smells food, but hasn't yet.

I am paranoid my cat is in renal failure or something and the wait is awful.  He is 14 years (kinda left that out huh?) and he is the light of my life.  His breath has a stronger odor than usual and I know that can be a sign as well.  But wouldn't your breath be a little off if you weren't getting the nutrients and liquids that it normally does?

If anyone has any thoughts or comments they would be much appreciated as they last 8 or 9 hours of waiting on the vet to open up and hopefully having the results is almost like a lifetime!!

They took blood when you went to the Vet, right?  When did they say they would have the results?  I would think you should get them by today at the latest.  Kidney disease would definitely show up on a blood test.  From my experience, he would be drinking TONS of water with kidney disease, and this does not sound like what he is doing.  Loss of appetite...yes, this is a sign also.  But that could be a sign of something else.

It sounds like he's obviously hungry, because he's going to his food, but then it makes him sick.  My concern at this point is Hepatic Lipidosis, which cats can get if they don't take in enough nourishment.  (their livers literally shut down).  If I were you I would call the Vet back and tell them what has transpired since your visit, see if the blood test results are in, tell them about the black stools, the chemical breath, the throwing up upon smelling food...all of it.  Plus be aware that HL doesn't immediately show up on a blood test, but he could be in the beginnings of it.  I don't want to scare you, but if he is, it's a serious thing.  You might have to force feed him...even if he isn't, you still might have to force feed your guy so he doesn't get it.

I agree, the bloodwork should be back by now.  It's possible your little guy has liver problems - unusual stools and vomiting can be symptoms of that.

The bloodtest results should shed some light on what's going on.   Remember to tell your vet about what you've written here, regarding the stools, breath odor, etc.

Hepatic lipidosis is usually more of a concern with overweight cats, but is still something to keep in mind with all cats who aren't eating much or not eating at all.  Days of limited water and food will only make a bad situation worse.   Make sure to keep you cat hydrated if he's not drinking on his own.  You can use a small syringe to give him water.  Just be very careful to do it slowly and aim down the side of his mouth, between his cheek and teeth, not straight down the middle of his mouth.  But hopefully by now, you'll have already spoken with the vet and have a better idea of what's going on.

Hope your boy is doing better.  Please let us know.
