My 5 year old spayed kitty was prescribed Xanax by the vet for fear aggression issues. I started medicating her on Wednesday. The first doasage I gave her was waaay to much (she became very hyper and drunk). Per the vet's orders, I reduced her dosage the next day (Thursday). The lower doasge sewms to be keeping her cal. It is now Sunday and she hasn't eaten much at all since Thursday. I tried treats, canned food, moving her usual dry food to another location, and baby food. She won't touch any of it. :( The only way to get her medicine in her is to grind it up in some butter and spread it on her paw so she licks it off. I think she's suspicious that all her food has medicine in it. Any suggestions on how to get her to eat?

Have you tried warming her food slightly?  Usually that will bring out the smell better and help entice them.  So she won't even go for ANY treats?  If she will, you could try mixing in a few into her kibble, or crush some up and sprinkle over her canned food.

As far as mixing her meds in with butter for her to lick off her paw, if that's working and the butter doesn't interfere with the absorption of meds, I think I'd continue giving it that way in the future, so she doesn't associate her food with them anymore.

Is she still getting the xanax-I would ask about going down the dose or switching to every other day. I take xanax and will not eat much on days I take  a dose.  Sometimes I feel like a hangover from it.

Thanks for the replies! She is beginning to sniff at her food, so I'm taking that as a good sign. I'll try warming her food up to entice her a bit more. She's not going for any treats at all. She will run over and sniff them, and then she reconsiders and runs away.

I plan on reducing the Xanax dose soon. I just wanted to give it enough time to work through her system. If she doesn't start eating ASAP, I'll lower it.

It's dangerous for a cat's liver to go too long without food. I would skip the Xanax  just to get her eating again asap. Her eating is the more important issue now. It she won't eat on that medication  your vet can recommend something else. I hope she is feeling better soon.

My dog gets Alprozalam (Xanax) and you have to be very careful on the dosage. The vet overdosed even my dog and he was drunk and stumbling when he received his first dosage. Now he only gets half of the original dosage. It can cause a decreased appetite. You could try a really high fat, high calorie nutritionally dense canned food. I always have Ziwi Peak canned foods http://www.ziwipeak.com/ (I order it from Amazon) on hand for times like that. The cats and dogs love that canned food and it is a great way to get calories into them and spike their appetite.

Good point about the liver. I'll stop the medicine tonight.
Thanks for the link for the food!
