Well, we're set this morning at "sometime between 10:00 and noon". He called yesterday and said I'm still on his list. I'm just glad that he does Saturday work....not many people do anymore. It means I'm home pretty much all day, but that's OK, too. Hopefully it will all work out today and I'll have my computer back.

OK, then! I'm on MY computer......finally! New power supply unit and new motherboard. Life is good. Well, semi-good anyway.

While he was doing a diagnostic check, it dinged to tell us that my hard drive is failing. Not good. Not good at all. Since the computer is still under warranty, Dell will send me a new hard drive and new Vista Ultimate OS CD (I hate Vista, but that's what I'm using now, so that's what they're sending). They will not pay for the technoweenie to come back though.....evidently the warranty doesn't cover technoweenie service for hard drives.

Talked to my wonderful, marvelous, outstanding sweetheart of a BIL and he will help me install the new hard drive. He's bringing a 500 gb external hard drive over this afternoon, so I can transfer everything over to that....that way, if the drive fails before we can get the new one installed, I won't have lost anything.

New drive should be here on Tuesday; my BIL and I will install the new drive and OS on Wednesday night. And then do another diagnostic check, just to make sure everything is kosher....the drive was the only item on this diagnostic check today, so all should be well. I have to send the old drive back to Dell within ten days.

And I have another 90 days warranty, following today's work, followed by another 90 days on the new drive on Tuesday.

Oh. I accidentally called John (the Dell tech) a "technoweenie"! Did it without even thinking about it. He laughed and laughed....said that was a new word!
I apologized profusely, but he said it was worth just to see my face turn red.

Anyway, for now, I'm back on my computer!

Good for you, I know you're a somewhat happy camper now.  Hope this gives your computer a few more good years

New hard drive is in the computer. It's a 1 TB Seagate. Good grief, that hard drive will die before I ever fill the thing! The paper did not say that it was refurbished, so I'm not sure if it is or not. Vista Ultimate, which is what I had before. I installed my Office Suite programs and my anti-virus stuff (Kaspersky Pure). And that was it. It took forever just to download all the Windows updates and then, after I installed Office, it took forever to download all the updates for that. So at midnight, I gave up and went to bed. Will work on it tonight for awhile, while Rick is bowling.

After I'm finished, we're going to kill the old hard drive (to delete my info) before sending it back to Dell.

I hate to say this because I don't want to anger the computer gods, but I think things are going to be OK!

Haha, you'd be surprised how fast a terabyte can fill up.
Just sacrifice the old hard drive to the computer gods and you'll be okay. :p

Oh crap. My Nook stopped working properly tonight with the computer and I can't get online. Took a good look at my wireless router and.....it is wireless no longer. Evidently the wireless part of the router bit the dust. I can still get online as both Rick and I are physically connected. It's just the wireless connection that isn't working anymore.....hence the Nook not working.

I'm waiting until after Christmas to buy a new router. I can still get online with my Nook at work, so I can still download updates and such. And we can each still get online with our computers. And I simply cannot afford a new router right now.

A few months ago, I was having trouble with my router; it kept rebooting on its own. I was about ready to get a new one, but then things calmed down and it's been acting properly. Until now.

It's always something. Let me see: motherboard, power supply unit, hard drive, and now the router. What's next? *sigh*

Oh my...  I know.  Even when it's not things that are very expensive; when it's a few things they add up!  I had to run out and buy a new printer yesterday.  I do my Christmas cards the lazy way...I print labels for the front!  And it died.  The customer support person for Cannon was great; but he was honest and suggested checking local places to see if they could repair it since one of "their" places was 120 miles round trip and I'm out of warranty.  But he warned me it might cost more to repair it than to replace it.  So it go replaced.  I found a decent deal at Walmart.  A new coffee pot is on hold for now.

This router is about four years old and is no longer under warranty. Darn it.

I have a Linksys router that I'm not using.  It isn't wireless though. I no longer have a need for it because my DSL internet box is also a router with a wireless connection.  If you are ok with a router that uses wires, I can send it to you if you PM me your snail mail address.
