I guess this is more of a rant, and just me being nervous.. but I'm really nervous about Lily's appointment next Thursday.I am taking her to a low cost clinic. Its a really nice place, I took Callie there in October. I'm just worried about how Lily will handle it. She's 15 weeks now, so I know shes plenty old enough. I just hate that I have to starve her the night before, and wont be able to feed her again until shes home that evening. She loves to eat. and I'm nervous about the rabies shot they will be giving, because I read its 16 weeks and up,and Lily will just be a little over the 16 weeks by then. I just hope it goes smoothly, with no complications. And I'm worried about when she comes home. When I brought Callie home, she did not rest at all like she was supposed to she was already playing that evening. I'm hoping I can figure out a way to keep Lily calm when she comes home, and won't want to play and lick her incisions. Any ideas? I was ready to pull my hair out with Callie, because she was running around so much, and I just want Lily to rest and heal up. Thanks for listening! December 6 is coming WAY too fast!

Is there any way you can get the rabies shot some other time? Getting spayed and vaccinated together like that puts a lot of stress on such a tiny body.

No, this place by law has to vaccinate against rabies when they are spayed, if they are not already vaccinated. I've done a lot of research, and some places say it is safe much younger than 16 weeks, and others say 16 weeks and up.  So I'm not really sure which to go by. Callie did just fine with spaying and the rabies shot, and Lily is younger, but not much smaller than her anymore. I'm just worrying myself to death with all these questions. On the "preop" instructions, it says kittens under 4 months can be fed after 10:00PM, up until 6AM the day of surgery, because of drop of blood sugars, but older kittens and cats must not be fed after 10:00PM. And of course Lily falls right in between there, so not sure which to go by. I am going to try and get in touch with the clinic within the next few days, and see what they say about feeding her before surgery.

No offense, but if you are so worried, you could push back her spay for another couple weeks to make sure she is the correct age for the rabies.  And keeping her calm afterwards, you could always give her a room of her own so she doesnt have the opportunity to run around and hurt herself.

That's what most cats do in my experience!  Only one of the cats I've had neutered over the years has wanted to take it easy when they got back from the vets.  Here in the UK the incision is almost always on the flank and the muscle fibres are parted, not cut.  Dissolving subcutaneous stitches are used so there is nothing for the cat to pick at.  I have no idea why the US is so fond of a mid-line spay which is a bigger op.
