So like the title says, my kitten's poop smells awful! When he goes to use the litter box in the bathroom on the other side of the apartment, it really smells as if he just pooped on the floor right beside me. He's around 8 months old, and I feed him around 3/4 to 1 cup of dry Purina kitten food a day. I avoid wet food because I've always heard it makes their poop smell bad. I went through a bag of adult dry food (can't remember the brand) about a month ago and it didn't change the smell.

Is there a reason why this happens?  As far as I can remember he's always been pretty smelly, but lately it's just ridiculous how strong it smells. He's had an issue with worms in the past, but he's been treated for those. He has gotten a little "flabby" in his midsection, I dunno if that's related at all. Is there something I can change in his diet, or am I doing something wrong?

It's the food.... Purina has so many things the kitty is not capable of properly digesting, it produces a poop that stinks to high heavens! Lucky came to me eating Purina One... Oh my Goodness! :thud:
Now I feed raw and their poop has barely any odor.... :bigthumb:
Cats are obligate carnivores, so the more meat and less grains and veggies the food has, the better their digestive systems will work, and consequently the less their poop will smell.
The thing about wet food is a myth. Wet food is far healthier for cats than dry; the more wet you can feed, the better off your kitty will be in the long run. :wavey:

Certainly agree with Carolina about the Purina.  I had switched my fur kids over to Purina Naturals from regular Purina Cat Chow; their poop doesn't smell nearly as bad now as it used to, but it can still occasionally waft one heck of a stink bomb through the house.

Talk with your vet.  Do some research.  Read the ingredient labels on cat food bags and cans; you'd be surprised at how many higher-priced brands use meat-by products and corn in their first 5 ingredients!
