Just bought a Christmas gift for my nephew Jay (actually he's technically a "great" nephew but it makes me feel old to to use the term "great nephew" so I'll stick to just nephew!

Anyway, that being cleared up - we got him a nice remote control truck which I know he'll love.

Leila is 9 and Savannah (my nephew's fiance's daughter) is 11. I'm thinking of some little girl type jewelry --- necklace, bracelet, earrings, etc? What do you suggest. I think they're past the doll/toy stage and both of them like dressing up. Is jewelry a good idea?

All three of our nieces loved to get jewelry (or books) at that age. Usually they got earrings or necklaces, but sometimes bracelets or rings.

What about some Disney Princess stuff? They have a bunch of that stuff in the under a $1 section at walmart. So you probably could make them gift bags or something. My friends girl who is almost 8 loves Disney Princess stuff. :) And my little 2nd cousin who is 3 years old adored the disney princess magnets I got her last year. :)

My niece is 10 and loves stuff with "bling."  Her favorite store is Justice and I found her a necklace with her initial studded in some kind of crystals last year on clearance.  She loved it.  I have a hard time with this age and presents...they are still kids but wanting to start being grown up it seems!

This year I put together a little nail polish kit.  Walmart had these small purses that were kind of a glittery, vinyl with cupcakes on them.  I put a few fun nail polish colors in it, some nail decals, a nail file and a clear nail polish to hold the decals on.  She really loved that.  My BFF's 9 year old is also into nail polish and getting the same thing.

I would ask the girls parents first if they are still into princess.  My niece wouldn't be caught dead in princess stuff (she does have a 4 year old sister; so that may be part of it!).  My BFF's 9 year old is into Monster High.  The difference in my niece between 8 and 9 was a big one.  I guess you could say she is a bit of a mature 10 year old.  Still acts silly and like a kid; but at the same time she has shot up in height, gotten into music, etc.  They grow up so fast!!

My daughter is 9 and loves that store.  They usually have some sort of 40% off specials going on.  I would be careful with ear rings due to allergies.  Hair baubles are always a good choice.

Tough ages. My niece is going to be 11 in January and I've had a tough time with Christmas for her. Arts and craft kits are always safe.

If her parents agree, I think I'd definitely do the arts/crafts kind of things. But ask yourself:

Does she like to cook/bake? (Now you know I was going to ask that! And the reason I did is because my granddaughter loves to bake.)

Does she like to read? What kind of books, do you know?

How about a favorite movie(s) that you could give her a DVD or two?

Does she like to do her fingernails? (I like Mooch's idea)

Does she like to do her hair?

Does she like bling? Do you see her with rings, necklaces, etc?

Does she listen to a favorite group?

Does she have an iPod? What music is on her iPod?

I also have an Arts and crafts kit with markers, colored pencils and paper.

Her birthday is the first week of January and I just keep buying and then decide what is for Christmas and what is for her birthday. :lol3:

YUP! That's what I used to do for my niece. I bought a friends little girl a bunch of new hair stuff once & she loved it! New brush & variety of things. Her grandma used to do hair, so they had fun!

I like stuff like that. You can make up your own "Theme basket."

thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to go with the gift bag assortment. Just picked up 2 little rope style black bracelets at JCP with the word "sisters" and a heart on each of them. Going to check WalMart, etc. and get an assortment of hair ornaments (they both have long hair), fingernail stuff, etc.

I think one of the most fun things you can do for a Christmas gift for a little one would be to make a really awesome memory with them! Over the years, the gifts that have been the favorites of my nieces/nephews have been the ones we made together! (Even though they're older now, I STILL take them to our local pottery studio and we hand paint ornaments, plates, etc together. and put the date on the bottom of them.) If you took her to something like "Paint a Piece" if they have one in your area, you could paint something together a few weeks before Christmas, then you go back once it's ready and pick it up. Wrap it up and give it to give her on Christmas, and she'll have something really fun to open up and she'll remember how much fun she had painting it. (Just an idea! :) )

Your suggestons were perfect. Aside from the JCP "sisters" bracelets, I got them some silver glitterly nail polish, a manicure kit, small cosmetic type bag, hair scrunchies. It'll make a really cute gift basket.
