We also raise kits of ferals weTNR and adopt them out!

And pull ear tipped cats that were brought into a high kill shelter and release them at the address where they were trapped at if we see signs of a caretaker...

And we adopt them out if they are tame.

Beautiful cats and beautiful photos! Thank you so much for sharing their story with us! Those feral cats at the shelter are so lucky to have you take them back to their homes - that's very special.
Any idea how they end up at the shelter to begin with? Don't the people there know it's a neutered feral cat that should stay at the colony?

Wish I could take them all in! been living in this neighborhood for a year now, and have been feeding the strays/fearls and building bonds with them! Thinking about making the feral colony i have outside some shelter this winter. So excited :)
Welcome to TCS!
How wonderful of you to care for these strays and ferals! I do hope you have a TNR program in place too?

TNR is just now being an accepted way of dealing with ferals, and it is not universally accepted. Some "people" still think trap and kill is the answer. Homeowners and animal control trap and take them to the local kill shelter.

I have a colony 2 miles from my home, near a church, hence, "The Church Colony". Just put together & placed insulated cat/kitten shelter for them. Around 8 cats & 4 older kittens. Feed, de-worm, TNR 8 cats/kittens, so far. 3 from this colony (prior) to the cats/kittens there, now. living at my home with my 3 domestics x one year. I have converted a bedroom to "Cat Room". All are doing well: my indoor & my outside colony. Plan: continue to TNR more of outside colony.

Hello and welcome aboard! I hope the cats are neutered or in the process of being neutered? It can soon become very overwhelming when trying to manage a colony of cats that keep multiplying. Badge awarded, as you are a friend of ferals, but I'm looking forward to learning more about your TNR efforts.

I don't know if this counts, but I most of the cats I have adopted were ferals or semi-ferals.

I choose to adopt them because we live in a very quiet area close to a park, which is perfect for cats that need to roam and cannot adapt to having no or limited outdoor access.

Most of them became house cats, but some remained feral and turned out not to be able to adapt to living in a house.

Tosca has taken up residence in the park opposite our street, and we visit and feed her there. Klaatu also used to live in the park, but we had to relocate him to a farm in the end, because he would raid the kitchens of the houses along the edge of the park, and some occupants got so sick of him stealing their steaks, salmon and chicken legs from the worktop, or even out of the pan, that they threatened to harm him. He was the king of his farm, the farmer appointed him chief mouser and assistant cowherd, both of which tasks he took very seriously. Unfortunately, one visitor to the farm didn't acknowledge the fact that he owned the place and didn't adjust his speed to Klaatu's insistance on inspecting every arriving guest and his vehicle, so he got run over.

Connor and his brother Gaudi (the latter of which we unfortunately lost to FIP at the age of 10 months) were also born feral. Connor is a very outdoorsy type, who spends a lot of time hunting mice and rats in the park, but he has become a true house cat who loves to sleep on the bed with us and is extremely social towards other cats.

Romeo and Xena were caught at a camp site close to farms, Xena was found as a motherless kitten at just 6 weeks old, and Romeo was an entire tom when he was caught at approx. 2½ years old. They are probably closely related, as Romeo is a diluted ginger and Xena a diluted tortie, and over here, the diluted gene is rather rare in ferals and farm cats.

Wobbel is not really a feral, he was a house cat that got dumped by his owner and lived on the streets for nearly 2 years until we heard about his plight and collected him.

I also volunteer at a rescue that gets a lot of ferals and farm cats. I help socialize feral kittens by sitting in their pens with them and reading fairy tales or singing lullabies to them till they get accustomed to a human presence, scent and voice.

I hope I'm doing this correctly to receive the 'Friends of Ferals' award badge.

I feed a colony of feral kittens and cats that live around a local grocery store I shop at in another town. I feed them each morning and during the evening. The majority are very elusive, but there is one kitty in particular who is friendly only to me and two employees of the grocery store. I named her 'Mama' because she is constantly pregnant. She was sort of the stores 'mascot' and many people fed her. Unfortunately, the grocery store went out of business in December 2014. I now find myself spending much more money trying to feed all these precious, feral kittens and cats. My hope for 2015 is to, finally, trap Mama and have her neutered. I worry myself to death about all of these precious, feline furbabies. Their whole world has changed now that the grocery store closed down, because I know they got fed scraps from the meat department in the back of the store. The babies only come out at night when the shops in the strip shopping center close down and there's no 'people traffic'. Each morsel of food I leave for them is GONE the next day!

I am very worried about ALL the feral kittens and cats with this artic blast that is pushing down all the way to the coast  (TX) - The Gulf of Mexico! Wish I could put out DIY, warm, insulated, Styrofoam, igloo coolers out for them, but whoever is in charge of the vacant building/property removes them! So the poor kittens/cats are left out in the cold, which breaks my heart. I just pray 'Mama' doesn't have her babies during this weather.

That's my story of helping a colony of many feral kitten/cats.

I have five strictly indoor furbabies which I rescued off the streets when they were wee, little babies. Ranging in ages from 7 1/2 y/o to my newest little one who is now 4 months old. Love them all and couldn't live without them. I also rescue horses.

Honestly, @SilkyMoth, one of the big issues when caring for strays and ferals is TNR: trap, neuter, release.

It is important that this is the primary aim (apart from the well-being of the cats and kittens) otherwise the problem becomes insurmountable.

Perhaps you could talk to your local rescue organisation for some advice on how to go about this?  There are many people here on the site who can help as well.

Welcome to TCS! You obviously love the cats and care for them and I'm awarding the badge. Please do read more about TNR. Unless you trap and neuter them really fast, you could be feeding a couple of dozens of cats in no time (at which point TNR can become overwhelmingly expensive!)

Welcome to TCS! Badge awarded and I'm so happy you have a plan in place for TNR'ing the little guys. As for the property's managers giving you trouble, maybe you could get some help from Alley Cat Allies regarding your legal rights in the matter? They may be able to help. You could start a thread about it in the Ferals Forum too where members can help with more advice.

I love that you sit there and sing or read stories to them.  I have such a picture of that in my mind.

California girl in Michigan. :)
Try contacting "FixNation".  They will loan the traps and teach you how to use them.  You have to put down a credit card in case the traps get lost or stolen, but that never happened to me.

I'm assuming they're not just a California thing - thus the word "Nation". :)

Best organization I've ever come across. :)

We were able to trap the Mama - which was a big deal cuz out of all the cats we trapped (about 9), she was the only female !  She was so haggard from being a kitten machine, it was sad.  Since being fixed and de-wormed, vaccinated, she blossomed. :)

Good luck !!
