Hi all.  My kitty has sub-fluids every other day to combat CKD. Today her lab tech forgot to bring a new bag and the clinic is closed for the weekend, so she's going to miss a session. Her last was Thursday - her next will be Monday morning.  Will this have any adverse affect?

Well if she needs fluids every other day, obviously missing a dose is not good. If you can't get her fluids, try to keep her as hydrated as possible until then. Plenty of wet food and water.

If you don't administer the fluids at home, perhaps you could learn how. It is easy and this won't happen again due to someone else's screw up. We gave our CKD kitty fluids at home. You can buy a fluid kit from the Vet or online and always have it handy.

Good luck

Hi, gooned. Thanks for responding. I have the lab tech come to my home to administer. I tried it myself when the vet first put her on them and it was a nightmare for both of us. He's usually very responsible. I will monitor her food/water intake. She's pretty good about drinking water and her appetite has been great. So I'm hoping the positive effects will linger a couple of days.

:yeah:

See if she will eat her canned food with some warm water mixed into it, and feed small meals frequently. Keep track of how much water you are adding. If you add a tablespoon at a time and feed her six or 8 small canned meals in one day, that will be 8 extra tablespoons of water.

I, too, urge you to learn to do the fluids at home, if at all possible. However I know some people can't, such as if you had bad arthritis. My mother can't do fluids at home, and there have been many times I've driven up to her house when she forgot to bring a cat in on schedule (I usually have supplies on hand at home)

All paws crossed for your girl.

Well, so far so good. She ate what I gave her earlier, drank water from her circulating fountain. And I just peeped her eating on her own - not only from her bowl, but my other kitty's too! If we can just keep it up through tomorrow, she'll have fluids by 11 AM Monday. Lesson learned? Always have an extra bag onhand.

An update: My kitty was just fine missing a fluid session. She ate and drank as she normally does, was very noisy (as usual) and kept to all her routines. Now I have an extra bag in the house and always will.  Thanks for your responses. :)

Thanks for the happy update! :)

I always feel better having some lactated ringers and supplies in the house, even though I don't currently have any cats with serious illnesses.

Orpheygene, when my first kitty had CRF learning how to give her fluids was pretty rough for her and me.   There were yowls, there were tears, all sorts of misery.   But I got on lots of internet groups to learn tips and tricks, went to the vet for lots of coaching, improved my technique and after a couple of months me giving her fluids was as routine as giving her food and she had almost zero stress from it.   She'd even purr sometimes during.   It's a skill I have been very glad to have learned and needed with two of my other cats..  When her CRF worsens later on and she has to go to daily fluids, it will be really nice for you and her for it to be a stress-free ten minute operation at home.   Also if you ever have a cat have problems with diarrhea or vomiting, you can give them fluids to help perk them up until they can get to the vet.  So anywho, I know it's not for everyone but just consider it - the benefit is huge for your and your kitty.   If you ever want advice on it feel free to send me a message.
