I have been working actively to assist animal rescue groups struggling with the aftermath of Sandy in New Jersey and Staten Island and now have a Long Island group that has specific needs. All total, our local dog clubs donated over $5,000 for me to personally deliver supplies. I can do so much more by reaching out to enlist the help of the many people who want to help but have no idea how to make sure their money is going to get to the animals and their people they intended it to help. So far, I've been down to New Jersey twice and Staten Island twice. The concept is "Rescue a Rescue." What I do is identify a reputable rescue organization, then make contact with them to find out what they need. This ensures that money isn't spent on items that are already taking up too much storage space. If the need is urgent, my friend and I do the shopping and drive the supplies down personally, take a picture if possible and let the donor know which rescue they've helped with the picture. If it's a bigger need, I figure out someone to call in for backup. It has worked very well so far and now the whole thing has exploded into a Fill the Truck event and media and much ado about animals and now even people! Which brings to me to my reason for writing. I have more groups that need assistance than I can help. I have groups that are specifically in need of cat supplies, so am reaching out to CFA, ACF and TICA to see if we can get some cat "Rescue a Rescue" donations going to help. We're loading the truck on December 1st and driving it down on December 2nd. I may may another trip before then if some donations I'm waiting for come in. Please understand that I am not a charity. I am just a member of a dog club that started out to help one animal rescue, then thought well why not help a few more, then realized I hadn't seen one Red Cross truck or even a worker, and now find myself connected to both the animals and people who, I promise you, are deserving of help. The website is: www.upstatenewyorkcares.com Below is a list of just some of the needs on my list. Any assistance you could provide, whether directly through your clubs or if you'd like my assistance in getting the items to their destination, will be much appreciated! Thank you so much for your time and consideration, Christine Schultz Former Cat Lady, Current Dog Lady In Loving Memory, Smitty, Ariel ------------------------- Staten Island Hope Animal Rescue -You can see a picture of her on the website. She needs: 1) Cat traps (urgently needed), They are trying to catch displaced cats and also have a spay and release program with Staten Island Feral Cat Initiative. . 2) They had a donation of 300 plastic bins to make shelters for the feral cats but now need fleece blankets and supplies to fix them up nice and toasty. (Would have to find out exactly what they use) ----------------------- Bobbi and the Strays Their Long Island shelter was devastated and is hugely in need of help. They only sent me a list of small items, but I also know they need a boiler and I believe they said they lost their lawn mower. Bobbi and the Strays - Items Requested Cat Litter Friskies Wet Food Ninelives Wet Food Fancy Feast Wet Food 2 Fire Extinguishers 1 Large Metal Cabinet with lock for non-perishable medial supplies (Must be narrow) A set of Tools and toolbox Printer/Fax/Copier but not too large or the ones that use large cartridges Digital Camera 16gb Flash Drives (3) ----------------------- Volunteer Centers: The rescues and neighborhood volunteer centers are always short on pet supplies. The larger donations end up in large distribution centers and just doesn't make it to the people who are trying to stay in their homes and rebuild. Louie's Legacy - They have organized a distribution center and are handing out pet food to those in need. They run out on a regular basis. -- Diane Bove Kitykarekurl Selkirk Rex www.kitykarekurl.com SNAPS Cat Rescue |
