I got my cat from the local animal shelter almost 2 months ago. Shes just under a year old. She was spayed about 4 weeks ago and ever since her surgery shes been randomly pooping really runny poop every where, she does go in the box but she goes every where else too. She never pees outside of her box. Shes ate Purina Indoor Complete since we brought her home from the shelter and never used the bathroom outside of her box until after her surgery. Shes lost weight from doing it so much, Ive heard it could be from the stress of the surgery and from the anitesia*. She eats fine, plays fine and acts normal.Shes had all of her shots and vaccines. The vet even said he didnt understand but if it wasnt better by the beginning of next week to bring her back in for another exam. Im so worried about her. Does anyone have any advice about this?

It can be caused from medicine. Is/was she on anything following the surgery? How about diet change? Diarrhea can also be a medical problem but not likely due to her young age. There is a risk of dehydration. See if she will eat some wet food for the additional moisture.

You should ask if they, by chance, gave her the injectable antibiotic Convenia following her spay?  Some vets will give antibiotics preventatively following a spay.  I'd ask about it.   If yes, this one lasts for 14 days but actually remains in the body up to 65 days.

Was kitty ever dewormed with proper deworming meds from the Vet?  (not pills you can buy over the counter).

If she's been having diarrhea for 4 weeks now I don't understand your vet's suggestion to wait until the end of next week to see her.    Why wait, 4 weeks of diarrhea all over the place is long enough.   My guess is that she's going everywhere because her butthole is sore from the diarrhea and at some point she began to associate that discomfort to her litterbox.

how many times a day does she have diarrhea?   Is it just after she eats or several times a day?

If it was me I'd be making an appt to bring her in this week, I wouldn't wait.   If possible for you to collect a fresh diarrhea sample and take it in with you so they can send it off to be analyzed (for various ova and parasites like giardia, coccidia.....make sure you request that both of these be tested for.....don't assume they'll do them).

Vet should check her out to see if she's dehydrated at all.

Do you have other pets in the home?   If so how does she get along with them?

Ask the Vet to try some FortiFlora....it's a Probiotic powder that you just sprinkle into their food, apparently has no taste.   If you feed her only dry food there are directions on the packet for how to give with dry food.   Might be a good idea to start giving her canned food a couple of times a day so that she's getting enough fluids to replace what she's losing with the diarrhea.

He might start her on the antibiotic Metronidazole (aka Flagyl) for the diarrhea, that's usually the common one they give for diarrhea.   If he does come her and post, it's a very very bitter tasting pill or liquid and we can give you tips on how to give it.

Check her poor little butthole to see if it's very red and inflamed.   If it is, and you can, I'd get some plain Lanolin cream from any drugstore......in the section where they sell baby stuff (diaper cream etc)......just the plain stuff, don't want anything with perfumes and such...and apply to butthole a few times a day.   It will help to protect that area from the diarrhea which can burn/inflame.   Most drugstores sell medical gloves or little finger cots (look like little condoms lol)...to put on your finger so as not to touch her butthole LOL.

Do you have a dog?   If so could she be getting into your dog's food.......or the food of another pet?

Also....are you giving her milk (cow's milk) at all?   Some people don't realize that cats can't digest it and that will cause diarrhea/upset tummy in cats.

I had a kitten that did this.  He ended up having coccidia AND giardia (which is not taken care of by normal deworming and requires special meds to treat.  It is also hard for a vet to pick up and it is probably better to just treat for this).  Both of those can lay dormant until the animal is stressed and then cause issues.  That is definitely something to check out.

Also, I would change her food to something more allergy friendly - just incase she did happen to develop an allergy to her food.

hay here problem I think is caused from the spay and food because when my kits was fixed all of them had bad runny stool for awhile and my vet acted like yours and do you feed her any wet food? if no start feeding wet you dont want her to get dehydrated and cats are sensitive to corn and grains and glutens so find a no grain dry cat food and slowly change her into the no grain diet and get a no grain wet i will pm you the brands i buy and my cats runny stool is starting to go away i recently stopped feeding purina and started on a no grain and my cats are doing better and i will suggest to go to a different vet because bad runny stool can also cause her to bleed you do not want that

I've had three female cats neutered and none of them have ever had problems like this afterwards.  I suspect it's conincidence, or the stress of neutering has let something get hold.  In this case agree with getting the stool tested.  They should check for T. Fetus as well.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Ill try to answer everyones questions.

She drinks water more than she east, but she eats through out the day too.Her eating habits have never changed. I do give her wet can food every other day or so but i will increase it to see if it helps. I do have 2 dogs and a cat Im fostering but shes always gotten along with them all. She has a vet appointment on Monday, thats why the vet said to wait until the beginning of the week. Shes going in to be microchipped.Like I said, her pooping is random.Last night I came in from taking my dogs out and went to give my cat her little plastic ball she loves so much and i seen some runny poop on my computer desk where she was sitting so i pick her up so she wont get in it and as im walking to the bathroom with her to get some wipes she poops a little ways across the floor also.I know it cant be comfortable for her.She was given pain pills,a pain shot and anti biotic spray, which is what I thought might be causing this but she hasnt had any in about 3 weeks or so.As for stress,Shes happy as ever, doesnt act like anything bothers her.She was dewormed at the shelter before I got her and the vet dewormed her for roundworms on her first vet visit almost 2 months ago.I thought about going to a nearby animal clinic for a faster opinion because lately my vet doesnt seem to care as much as he used to,or it seems like that to me.Thank you everyone for trying to help.

One of my cats did this as a kitten when we first brought her home (before she got fixed).  Our vet at the time said we could give her just a small amount of pepto-bismol.  It did the trick.  It would only be a short term solution for you but might help on a particularly bad day.
