I requested the results of my breast biopsies in the mail. I just got the results......

Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma...... Breast Cancer.

My doctor's appointment isn't until the 30th but I called today and they said to come in tomorrow morning. I know I have a rough road ahead of me. I know I will have to have surgery and possibly chemo and radiation.

I am just trusting God to help me through this.

I'm so sorry to hear this :(

I work at a cancer centre in a breast clinic. The doctor I work with does the radiation portion of the treatment.

From what I've seen with all of our patients, they all get chemo, and then get radiation to the area.  After the surgery, the margins are considered "clear", meaning they don't see any further cancer cells at the edges of the surgical area.  Radiation is given "just in case" to kill any cancer cells that still may remain.   The number of radiation treatments (called a fraction) vary from 16 to 28.  Sometimes they give an extra "boost" of radiation to the tumor bed in the last 3 to 5 treatments.

After the radiation is finished, you will follow-up with the radiation oncologist in about 6 to 8 weeks. And then every so often. You will also be having regular mammograms as part of the surveillance for the next 5 years.

Radiation is like intense sun, so over time as the # of treatments progress, your skin will turn pink, and likely red.  And sometimes there is skin deterioration to the area, similar to severe sun burn such as some blistering and peeling.  That is usually the side effect that I see for women coming into our clinic.  Now, not everyone has that problem. Everyone is different.  It really depends on how your skin is when you are out in the sun. If you tend to burn, you will likely experience more skin issues than someone who doesn't burn in the sun.    The important thing is to keep the skin folds (under the breast) dry and free of moisture and to apply fragrance free moisturizer to the areas of the skin being treated.

I know it is a scarey situation, but I'm confident you will do just fine!  If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM and I will do my best to help you through this.

Awww hang in there hun...... :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
I have two aunts who had breast cancer just last year..... Both had surgery, of course. One had radiation, but no chemo. The other only needed the surgery but no chemo or radiation was necessary. Both will need mammograms every 6 months for a long time, but are fine.

I will be thinking of you :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I will light a candle and pray for a complete recovery for you.  The power of positive vibes can overcome so much.

Many prayers and
heading your way.
My best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago. She went through chemo and radiation (not fun) but she is now cancer free since then. Please keep us up to date on what is going on and how you're feeling...physically as well as mentally. It's scary, but we're here for you.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. Sending lots and lots of

for you to get through this. I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling right now. I've always thought of you as a very strong woman and I know you'll beat this. It's a long road and you have a very heavy load, my friend. But you're in my thoughts and will be for a long time.
 Please keep us updated.

Saw my doctor today and he confirmed what I got in the mail. I do have breast cancer. he is referring me to a surgeon. The one he is referring me to is the same surgeon I had for my gall bladder surgery in 2004. He is an excellent surgeon. I should know when my appointment is sometime next week and after I see him when my surgery is. I don't know at this time if I will be having a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. I am keeping strong in my faith in God.

At my church's Ladies Bunco last night, one of my friends gave me a heart shaped Prayer Box. Inside is has the scripture, "By His stripes we are healed" I am to look in the box every morning before I get up.
