In honor of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, today's question is:

Did you, or anyone in your family, serve in the military? If so, when and where?

My dad was in the Navy in the late 50's and served on the USS Gwinn and the USS Tallahatchie County. He worked in the boiler room and always joked that he had been in NY harbor 6 times and never saw the Statue of Liberty. My husband was in the Navy as well from 1989-1994. He served on the USS Flying Fish, a submarine based out of Norfolk, and was a fire control technician (basically, he was the one that launched the torpedoes). I have so much respect for the military and their members and I want to thank all servicemen and their families for their sacrifices.

Yes, I am a Navy veteran.  I was a Torpedoman's Mate 3rd class on the USS Puffer, a fast attack submarine out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii during the Vietnam War.

My husband first served in the Army, then in the Marine Corps, and fought in Desert Storm, 2nd MarDiv.

My father was an Army vet, who fought in WWII.

My brother was in the Air Force in Vietnam.

My paternal uncle was first in the Marine Corps, then in the Air Force, in WWII.

I had a cousin in the Navy in WWII.

My FIL was in the Navy.

My BIL was in the Army.

Many men on my Father's side of the family fought in various wars, including the Revolutionary War and many, on both sides, of the U.S. Civil War.

I would like to thank all who who served in the United States military.  Your dedication and sacrifice have made our great country a safe and free place to live.

My dad and one of his brothers served in Korea, while their younger brother served in Vietnam, all as Marines. A couple of cousins served in Vietnam in the Army or Navy, while my brother chose the Air Force but remained stateside.
Three great uncles served in WWI, while another great uncle and a cousin served in WWII - they were all Army. AFAIK, the first family member to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces was a great-great-great uncle who was a Union Army surgeon; he's buried at Gettysburg.

Currently my baby cousin is serving in the US Army as an engineer. He has been to Iran and Afghanistan several times. My nephew was a Marine and was in Desert Storm ( I saw him yesterday and gave him a big hug. :heart3: ) Two cousins (brothers) served in the Marines and Army.

Dad was in the Army and was a truck driver in Korea.

One gg grandfather tried to avoid service during the Civil War by faking injury, but was later seen clicking his heels and enlisted then. :lol3:

If I wish to pursue it, I am eligible to join the Daughters of the American Revolution.

My dad was an American veteran of WWII. He passed away three years ago at the age of 86 (never recovered from an accident on his ranch).

He was a medical technician in England at Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's Supreme Headquarters. My dad liked to tell the story of how the five-star general, who later became the 34th president, came into the lab and my dad drew his blood to give to injured soldiers.

My dad also arrived one day late at Normandy because of maintenance problems with the ship he was on.

My father told some interesting stories about Gen. George S. Patton, and how he was truly hated by the soldiers and other officers in command. He said Patton sent in troop after troop to their deaths with complete disregard for the value of their lives. When Patton slapped and kicked a wounded soldier and his career demise began, my dad said everyone had been waiting for a long time for him to really slip up - the incident was played up because everyone wanted him out.

In contrast, Gen. Eisenhower was a great leader, as partially evidenced by the fact that he regularly gave blood for wounded soldiers! My dad said he had a much more humane approach with his power, he knew and felt the sacrifices made by the men and didn't throw their lives away so easily or readily. He had a lot of admiration for Gen. (later President) Eisenhower.

My father served in WWII as an Army sergeant.  He was stationed in Italy and North Africa. He tried to enlist right after Pearl Harbor, but because he was not yet 17, he was too young.  He joined in early 1943 and was honorably discharged in late 1945.  He was a company clerk in an intelligence unit; that's really all I know.  While he was still alive I was not as interested in my family history as I am now.  I wish I had been able to talk to him about his experiences.

My dad was in the Navy for 20 years. He was a Machinist's Mate on ships and, when on shore duty, an MP (because they didn't know what else to do with a Machinist's Mate on shore duty! :lol3:). I know he served on the USS Juneau, USS Dubuque, and USS St. Louis, but he might have been on something else that I don't know about. He worked in the boiler rooms. He has medals for serving during 3 wars/conflicts but never saw combat or a war zone.

My maternal grandpa was in the Navy for about 18 months. He was at Pearl Harbor when the bombing happened. He worked for the Panama Canal Company when his enlistment was over.

My maternal grandma was a WAC until she got pregnant. Then she was a secretary for some bigwig with the PCC.

A couple of my mom's brothers were in Vietnam and saw combat. One was a radioman and didn't see too much. The other was a corpsman and saw way too much :(. They got federal jobs when they got out, one with the PCC and the other. . .hmm, I'm not sure. He worked at White Sands though, I know that much. Another of her brothers was in the Coast Guard, later in the Army National Guard as a cook and went to Iraq/Afghanistan. A chubby man in his late '50s really shouldn't be wearing a flak jacket in 120-degree weather, while cooking!

My dad's brothers were in the Navy and Air Force, both 20-year retirees. His dad was in the Merchant Marine and worked for the PCC but was never in the Armed Forces.

My Dad was on a mine sweeper in the Navy during WWII. He was so proud of his service, and wanted to stay in, but my mother didn't want him to.

Dad was in the Marines; that's how I was born in Camp LeJeune, NC.

My FIL ended up in Germany during WW II. And that's pretty much all I know about it, because that's really all he talks about it. That he was in Germany.

My great grandfather and some uncles fought in the civil war. A cousin was a POW in the Korean War. My son served in the US marines in the 90's. My niece and a nephew served in the AF in the 90's. My granddaughter is there now. God bless all those who make this sacrifice for peace.
