My cat, Muffin, takes a daily dosage of 1/4 of a 5 mg. tablet of methimazole for thyroid. My vet sells me 10 pills, quartered and I pay close to ten bucks. This mail order company sells a 30 ct. bottle for the same price. The information says they will have to be furnished a prescription from the vet before they would send the medicine. My question is has anyone here ever ordered any prescription medicine from them. I also notice they sell the pill pockets. I pay nine to ten dollars at the local pet store. Seems like they have very good prices, but I want to hear other people's experiences if they have ordered from them.

I have ordered from them many times with great satisfaction, but I've never ordered prescription meds. I think your vet needs to fax a prescription to them. They're an accredited pharmacy so there shouldn't be any trouble. They have excellent customer service so I'm sure they'd be very helpful if you called/e-mailed.

I've ordered scripts from them and have been satisfied. The only thing is you either have to have your vet fax over the script or if they won't do that you ask them to give it to you and you have to mail it in which takes awhile. Once it's mailed in though and they have it, if your vet put refills on it, then all you have to do is re-order online.

I am not sure how my vet would react to this. I have always done everything through him. But getting three times as much medicine for the same price is enough to make me want to check it out. I would just have to find a way to cut the pills into quarters. Is there such a thing as a pill cutter.:lol3:

Most vets know about the online pharmacies.  I've used Drs F&S for prescription things previously and my vet has been more than willing to send in the prescription.  Before ordering online, why don't you ask your vet if s/he'll match the online price?  The worst that can be said is NO and then you can order it online.  However, you might get lucky and they'll match the online price.

Of course there are pill cutters! You can get them in any pharmacy department of any grocery store or drug store. :)

PS this is the kind I use:

Look them over carefully before purchasing. I do not recommend the kind that has "non slip cutting surface". I found those very inefficient.

I have been using the above linked pill splitter for 13 years. (well not the same one of course, the blade seems to stay sharp for about 5 years before needing to be replaced)

I have been completely satisfied with everything I've ordered from them.  One has to be careful ordering meds online and only do it from a reputable company.  Forsters and Smith is one of the "good" guys as far as I can tell.  I have not ordered scripts from them.  I always get what I need at the vet's office and he will match their price if he can.  If he can't, I will buy from him anyway.  He has been awfully good to me and my furkids for over 25 years.

While I've never gotten any scripts from Foster and Smith, I've ordered many, many other items from them. We've always been very satisfied with their products and have never had a bit of trouble with them at all. If I had to, I wouldn't have any qualms about getting prescriptions from them.

We used a pill splitter with Banshee's meds (she took several meds for thyroid and for heart problems) and while it worked OK, I found that using a very, very sharp knife worked about as well. Banshee took 1/2 a pill, though, not a quarter.....I don't know how well the knife would work to quarter a tablet.

I am still wondering about this company. I asked my vet and he doesn't have any knowledge of this company. Has anyone ordered any pet medications from this company. If so, are you satisfied.

I have ordered basic RX with no issue and my father used this for a few RX for his large dog.  Blood work was always fine so quality/ingrediants are good.

I called this company today and asked them point blank how could I be sure that I would be getting medicine that would not harm my cat like some of the counterfeits I have read about. They said the are licensed by the government and by the state of Wisconsin. Based on that knowledge would you folks trust them enough to order prescription medicines taken orally by your cats or dogs.

I don't really understand what else you want us to say. There are a bunch of us here who have said we've used them and trust them and if they are licensed by the state then they are legal.

As much as I would trust Walgreens or Lewis Drug :dk:. They have a lot to lose if they don't behave themselves.

I have ordered a few times from them.  They are quite reputable imo.  I get their catalogs all the time.  They have lots of nice things.  I wouldn't be hesitant to order from them at all.

They are very reputable, I have ordered from them for years and been to their WI facility.  I don't order meds through them but I wouldn't hesitate to.  They have excellent customer service.

My sister said her vet charges, I think $5, to send a prescription to any other pharmacy.  Her sister-in-law works there, and it's where the kitten came from, so you'd think she'd be able to cut her a break on that, but no.  So you may wanna check on that as well, and have to factor that in.

Maybe this wil ease your mind. They are accredited by Vet VIPPS which is VETERINARY-VERIFIED INTERNET PHARMACY PRACTICE SITESCM accreditation through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy[emoji]174[/emoji] (NABP[emoji]174[/emoji]).

Dr Fosters&Smith info page:

What the VIPPS is:

http://vipps.nabp.net/verify.asp

It's real, and bonafide, online pet pharmacies that show that icon (as Drs Foster &Smith does) are considered safe for prescription medicines.

However, if this is making you so nervous, is it worth saving a buck or two? Why not just have your vet write the prescription and take it to your own pharmacy? That's what I always did, for methimazole, phenobarbital, norvasc and lactated ringers solution.

I think anybody would want to explore all their options and be careful when it comes to what goes in their cat's mouth. I am just doing my research before making a decision. Two things that have been suggested I will explore is if the vet charges to fax the prescription and also checking the local pharmacy that we use for people medicine.
