I would like to share my experience.  I have used Azodyl for my 15 yr old snowshoe siamese girl's CRF.  When she first showed CRF symptoms, 8 years ago, it was touch and go for a while.  After she got out of the feline ICU, we went through several months of daily sub-q fluids, tapering over time as her bloodwork improved.  For a couple of years, she got sub-q fluids only on an as-needed basis, when her bloodwork got out of balance or we could tell she didn't feel well.  She has been on Hill's k/d dry diet since her diagnosis.  A new vet at my clinic suggested Azodyl and we started using it several years ago.  My kitty gets one large capsule per day, but I break it open and sprinkle it on a half small can of wet food (my vet's suggestion as the capsules are so big and my kitty is so small).  I feed her a half small can of some high quality wet food every morning as this is how to get the medicine in her and a treat for her and her non-CRF brother (Caleb).  Also, her manners around ‘people food’ have always been pretty atrocious, but she seems even worse since developing CRF; I think she is craving the protein she’s NOT getting on the k/d diet.  So the small amount of canned food she gets seems to help her protein ‘withdrawal’.

Azodyl is a probiotic mix of extra ‘good’ gut bacteria that helps the intestines to clean up the toxins and wastes so the kidneys don’t have to work so hard.  One great thing about it is that if another cat or dog accidentally eats the medicine or medicated food, it causes no harm!  It’s actually good for them.

Since being on Azodyl, her bloodwork has steadily improved!  Her most recent bloodwork showed ALL values well within the normal ranges.  AND, she has even put on weight!  Almost up to 9 lbs now.  AND I can’t remember the last time she had sub-q fluids!  She has done well on Azodyl – she is bright, playful (as much as a princess can be with 2 hulking brothers) and has a beautiful coat.  Every day is a gift, miracle and blessing.

P.S. As of November 2012, the cheapest overall price (price + shipping) for Azodyl that I have found is online at probioticsmart.com.  You have to remember that it will cost more to ship Azodyl as it is perishable and must be shipped cool and fast.  I try to order a minimum of 3 bottles at a time; it’s cheaper that way.  Also, you might want to try to order enough in the spring (when the weather is still cool) to last you until fall (when it will be cool again).  I worry about the package sitting in a warm place and melting the enclosed ice packs, so I always order when most of the U.S. is having daily high’s well below 80 degrees F.

I'm so glad your old girl is still around after 8 years with CRF.  That's wonderful!  If it's the Azodyl, then seems like we'd hear more about it, but, then again, maybe not, since it's a "natural" way, which makes way too much sense.
Wish I had tried this earlier this year before I lost my
Sven
to CRF, although I had just started him on probiotics a few days before he died.  Too little too late for him

Best of luck to you and all your furkids.

that is incredible! our CRF cat Gilda was on Azodyl for a while but it didn't seem to help her numbers. she wouldn't eat food with the medicine on it so the only option was to give it orally, which she hated. after a couple of blood tests that didn't show improvement we decided it was easier on her not to force the meds anymore. does your girl eat well? that's the toughest thing for Gilda, for most of her life she was fed fancy-feast type food (we only took her in a few years ago) so now it's near impossible to get her to eat anyting appropriate; we're just happy when she eats at all. do you have any tricks to get her to eat? 8 years is pretty amazing, you're clearly doing it right!

so sorry to hear your gilda's not doing better w/ azodyl.  mitch was always a very bad girl around people food, even though we did not share with her (what was WRONG with us?).  since developing crf and going on k/d dry food (she's always eaten dry primarily, wet food was an ocassional treat), her table manners are even worse!  we think it's because she is 'jonesing' for the protein she's no longer getting.  our vet suggested using the wet food as a treat and an enticement to get the meds in her.  but getting her to eat is really not a problem.  i have heard of some decent meds for increasing a cat's appetite, but don't remember specifics.  i hope gilda has a good pediatrician (veterinarian to the outside world); that makes all the difference.  mitch and i send you both prayers and kisses!
