Went to Bed Bath and Beyond and looked at their Sharks which were very nice, and good price, using the 20% discount coupon.

BUT - I've always liked the Oreck and there is an Oreck store right next to BB&B. Their vacuum is amazingly light, seems to work very well and so compact and easy to handle. Looks like I'm going to go back there tomorrow and get their mid range product. We only have carpeting in the 3 bedrooms, one of which is the office/computer room/home of the litter boxes, etc. Their product is good with cat hair, litter, etc., so we don't have tons of carpeting to clean. I'll be so happy to not have to lug around my ancient Hoover, which we've had a good 20 years, and weighs a ton! Oreck gives a good warrantee and their store is not far from home so good for any service we might need.

I'm not especially fond of Orecks as I feel they're TOO light and just skim across the top of the carpet instead of getting deep into the fibers. But my mom loves hers. So a matter of taste, I guess :dk:.

It should work well for me (I hope). Our carpeting is not real thick and since we only have the bedrooms carpeted, there is not really a lot to clean. It is small enough so it slides under the bed easily. And after that super heavy Hoover, a light cleaner will be a pleasure.
We don't have stairs in our house. Also there is a 30 day money back warrantee, so if I am not pleased with it I have that time to return it.

Picked up the Oreck today, just tried it on our carpeting and it works just great. It's such a pleasure not to have to lug around that ancient Hoover that weighed a ton -- and lately has lost its suction --- but it is around 20 years old so I shouldn't complain.

Now I can "almost" look forward to vacuuming the carpeting!! Great investment.

I have never seen an Oreck.  I am using a twenty something year old cannister Electrolux.  It has been serviced some, had the hose replaced and the on/off switch, but it ti still doing good.
