I came home from work today to find that my 19 year old cat is very wobbly and unsteady on his feet.  He hasn't outright fallen over but he is definitely unsteady.  Everything else about him is perfectly normal.  He had a great appetite when I fed him, he's as affectionate and chatty as ever.  But I was doing a little Googling and wondered if he suffered a stroke perhaps?  Given his age, I don't want to subject him to a lot of invasive testing.  But I don't know what to do.  Does anybody have any thoughts?

Kevin,

I am so sorry to hear this.  It could be any number of things including stroke, or a blood clot.  We would only be guessing.  If you can't get him to the ER tonight, try to keep him confined in a warm, quiet place - if that will not upset him - until he can be seen tomorrow by your vet.  Good luck, welcome to TCS and please keep us posted.

If anything comes up tonight, there will be people on who can help.

Thank you so much.  He's definitely resting and comfortable.  He's totally normal except for the wobbling.  Thank you for this community. I happened across it while looking for information.  I appreciate this a lot.

I happened ot run across this while looking for information.  Thank you for this community.  I just don't know.  He's resting and comfortable and seems perfectly normal in every respect except for the wobbling.  I'll definitely be keeping an eye on him tonight and see what tomorrow brings.  I hope it passes and he's okay.  Thank you again.

I'll be watching this thread.  You try to stay calm too, and eating is always a good sign!

There are so many reasons that an older cat may become unsteady on their feet, from something like a potassium deficiency, anemia, dehydration, muscle wasting, to even *just* arthritis, amongst other possibilities. Many of these can be remedied with a simple nutritional supplement or medication. When was the last time he went for a check-up at the vet? If he were my kitty, I would at least go for a senior blood panel and urinalysis to see what's going on.
