My foster is about 5 months old. He is on his second round of Prednisone for a rodent ulcer on his top lip. The ulcer is gone and he starts to get weaned off later this week. I noticed he does have gingivitis. His breath is very foul. Would simple gingivitis be the cause or could there be something else going on?

He's eating well and seems to have lots of energy. Has anyone had experience with rodent lip and was it chronic?

Thanks :)

Sorry no one ever responded to your inquiry.  I'm just seeing this for the first time today!  How is this baby now that two more weeks have gone by?  Is his breath still stinky?  I would definitely think that gingivitis would cause that, but am more concerned that a 5 month old already has it.
But it can also be indicative of digestive issues.  Does he keep his food down ok?  Obviously he is under a vet's care, since he was on Pred.  Did you ask about his breath?

Hi.  We haven't dealt with the lip thing specifically but my Eko (two years old) has very bad teeth and gums.  His breath started stinking somewhere around 6 months of age.  So, in his case I do think bad breath was a sign of poor dental health even as a kitten.

I would have blood sugar checked.  Diabetics get a distinct smell and pred is known to raise blood sugar
