My cat who is about 12 (and overweight) has been throwing up randomly for a while. After research I learned about the cheaper cat foods. I really feel bad about feeding her junk for all these years. I went on a hunt for a good quality food. I decided that I would choose blue buffalo wilderness. I wanted to do a raw diet but I'm not sure i can stomach it. ;)

There are so many cat food brands I have never heard of so i honestly didnt know what to get. My concern is more weight gain from too much protein with this food. I mixed some in with her crap food and she seems to love it. But do you guys think wellness may be a better choice?

Hi and welcome to TCS. More protein is good for cats, and is not what causes weight gain. Too much food, and/or food too high in carbohydrates, and low activity, is what causes weight gain.

Are you feeding canned or dry?

Really the first thing to do is to take your kitty to the vet for a check up. It could just be the food, but there may be something else going on. And a check up is always a good idea before any weight loss plan anyway. I recommend you have a senior blood panel done to make sure all her organs are healthy and she doens't have diabetes.

PS Try not to blame yourself for feeding "crap food" as you put it. You didn't know. Now you do and are doing something about it. That's what matters.

Here is an excellent web site written by a vet on the benefits of wet food, and she also has a list of many foods and their carbohydrate percentages.

You made a good choice. Hi protein food won't cause weight gain, high carb food will. In fact, cats don't need carbs at all. Are you feeding dry or wet?

I have always fed her dry but I did buy a few wet cans to see how she does with that. I will do a check up at her vet. A few years ago before we moved to a city she would go outdoors some and she would "hunt" for herself. Her favorite was frogs. I do think she would do great with a raw diet but id like to do this slowly since I've always given her grocery store cat food. She seems healthy otherwise but I know some things may be internal and not seen.

I have started feeding my kitten Wellness after years of feeding my cats crap food.  Blue Wilderness was another one that I considered, but as I was only choosing for my kitten obesity did not play a role in my decision.  I agree that you should not feel too bad about what your cat has eaten in the past- how were you to know?  How old is your cat?

I was googling reasons why cats may throw up. She doesnt throw up everyday, but it has been getting a little more frequent. There was all this info on commercial pet food not being heathy. I have had her for 10 years so I think she is between 11-13. A neighbor had some cats that they were going to drop off somewhere, so I took one. I had just turned 18 so I couldn't take them all, but I did save her though. I had her fixed, and she started putting on weight. It has gotten worse since she no longer goes outside to play some.
