My two year old cat, Beckham, seems to be sick. Starting today, (Saturday) his eyes are watering constantly, he doesn’t open them all the way, and his third eyelid is showing more than usual. (He is one of those cats whose third eyelids show a little bit all the time). He has been getting on the floor and coughing/wheezing at least once a day for a little over a week. He is also very tired and is not going outside a lot less often as he used to, while keeping in mind that it is getting colder. Now, is this just a hairball or something that will pass, or should I take him to the vet?

It does not sound like a hairball to me - more like a respiratory problem and/or cold. If he is still eating well, it may pass. The safe bet is to take him to the vet. A week of this sounds like he may need some help getting over it.

The eyes not opening completely and the third eyelid showing indicate something is wrong.  Definitely NOT a hairball.  Also, the coughing is a great concern.  You need to get your guy to the vet ASAP.

Sounds like he is definitely sick with some sort of URI or URI causing illness, those symptoms are very similar to what my kittens were... you need to get to a vet ASAP. It could be a URI/cold but it could also be a virus or bacteria that is causing it, like bordetella, herpes, chlamydia, calicivirus, mycoplasma, ect. (Not to scare you, but those are their symptoms and it's possible he picked it up from a neighborhood cat) Only a PCR test will be able to determine exactly what it is/is not... a bit pricey but necessary in cases like this IMO. You want to know exactly what is causing it so you can bite it in the bud with the proper medications.

You could give him some L-Lysine to help bolster his immune system. I have a couple of cars with herpes and I give them some L-Lysine paste when they have flare-ups. It does seem to help them.

Thank you everyone!!! Today Beckham seemed much better, his eyes stopped watering and he hasn’t coughed at all!!! He still seems a little down, so we will keep an eye on him, and if it worsens, we will definitely take him to the vet. Thank you all for your support!!!
