Follow up Distemper Vaccine?

I have two 14 month old brothers that just got their first distemper vaccine.  Is there really a need for a follow up after a few weeks?  They got their shots at a Humane Society clinic and the HS volunteer said a follow up would be needed.  I understand that it is normally done for kittens, and I know the reasoning for that, but is it really necessary for cats over a year old?

I know my 4 year old only had one when he was adopted.  As instructed when I adopted him, I brought him for a follow up to my (now retired) vet 4 weeks later and the vet said the follow up wasn't necessary.  It seems like there is so much conflicting info with this particular vaccine.

Just wondering what people's thoughts are about this.  I hate to have a follow up done if it isn't really necessary, since one of my little guys had an awful reaction to the first shot (he's fine now).

FWIW, They are indoor-only but I do have an older cat that goes out and he was given a distemper shot last year.

thanks

Aaccording to the vaccine manufacturer, a booster is required 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine. My vet agrees with your old vet and says this isn't necessary for adult cats. So, up to you, I guess :dk:.

Thanks for the info.  After more research, I think I've seen enough recommendations from vets and prominent vaccine researchers to comfortably skip the follow-up.  When my old vet advised skipping it on my 4 year old, the cat was still a kitten at the time and the doc still said not to bother with it.....so I figure if he thinks it was ok for a kitten to skip it, he'd feel the same for 14 month olds (he was a bit "old school" which is unsurprising since he was at least 80 at the time).

Have they been vaccinated previously?  The second shot is for the initial vaccinations regardless of age.

No, this was their first one.  I do know the protocol is generally 2 shots, regardless of age.  But I had come across my old records with my old vet and saw that he said a follow up wasn't necessary on my older cat (who was under 1 year at the time), so I decided to post here to see what people thought.  I did some digging last night and found that a prominent immunologist suggested that older kittens and adults with unknown vaccination histories are good for life with a single dose regardless of their prior history.

So, I'm still mulling it over.  I just don't want to put my little guy through the side effects again, if I don't have to.  He had a terrible reaction to the first shot and it was killing me to see him like that.
