I finally found the time to compose a letter to the editor of our local paper . . . . a rebutal (sp?) of a recent letter by a woman who was bashing a local Humane Society. . . . here it is . . . . I hope they print it. . . (Thanks everyone for supporting me in this effort. . . and giving me more choice of words to use in the letter).

To The Editor:

I recently read with great dismay a letter to the editor that bashed the XXXXXXXX Humane Society. A woman had adopted a dog there and when she took him to the vets for a check up, learned that he had some bad (infected) teeth that needed to be extracted. They were causing him pain and difficulty eating. She was upset because she paid $75 to adopt him and the vet estimated the teeth extraction bill to be approximately $175. She returned "George" to the shelter. She wrote a venomous editorial stating that they should not allow sick animals to be adopted and that they should have known that the dog had problems.

First of all . . . the Humane Society is not a for profit business. They are there to rescue animals that generally have needs. They are operating on a shoe string budget . . . relying on funding and volunteers. Ironically, a few weeks prior to the editorial, the front page of the Eagle featured an article that explained how the XXXXXXX Humane Society was desparately in need of supplies, volunteers, and good homes. At that time they had 60 cats (twice the amount that they could normally shelter).

I pray that "George" will find a loving home soon. . . . one where his new owner will not bat an eye at meeting his medical needs and will give him the love and attention he so deserves. I found "George" on Petfinder.com - if it's the same dog he is an older Beagle Mix. . . . and very cute.

Taking ownership of a pet comes with financial responsibilities including emergencies that may happen the first day of ownership or many months down the road. Perhaps some good will come out of this. . . . that George will find a more deserving home. . . that other animals will become adopted as a consequence of the negative publicity. . . that others will volunteer their time, resources, and money to local shelters in need.

Take a visit to a shelter and you will quickly learn that there's a problem with our society. . . one that breeds and sells innocent animals to make money. . . adding to the problem of neglected, abused and homeless pets.

And remember to help your local shelters!
