Hi & welcome to TCS!!

YES, wet food is much, much better for your baby, for digestive & urinary reasons alone. As you will learn the more you are around this site, you will see that many of us feed raw. Raw is considered the best to feed by far.  If you are interested in feeding raw, you will find MANY threads on this site about that, full of good information.  As for now, there are some good quality brands of canned food out there. The ones I like are, by nature & Before the Grain. There is also Natural Balance, Natures Variety. & many more. If you have a Petco near by, I would suggest looking there.

I have a Petco, Petsmart, & Pet Supermarket in my town, but found Petco had more of the better quality brands. You can also see if there is a Natural Food Pet Store in your area. I found one in mine, & hadn't known it had been here for 6yrs! (They are very small, so can't afford to advertise much). I was beyond thrilled when I found them! I can now afford to feed my baby raw!!

I'm sure many more members will come along soon & offer even more advice.

We have some wonderful, knowledgeable people on this site who have helped me as well!!

Good luck!

Wet food is definitely much better! The number one reason is moisture, cats need to get the majority of their water intake from the food they eat. Kitties that are fed only dry food can become chronically dehydrated because of this. Also, dry food contains way too many carbohydrates, which kitties essentially do not need. So feeding wet would definitely be the way to go!

Now, when it comes to wet food there is the lower quality foods and the higher quality foods. The lower quality foods are usually more advertised, and can be found in your grocery store. Higher quality foods are only sold in pet stores, such as Petsmart or Petco. There are also two types of higher quality foods: those that contain grains, and the grain free varieties. Definitely stick with the grain free foods, they are highly digestible and will cause less tummy issues for your kitty. Some of these foods are Weruva, Nature's Variety, and Wellness. :D

We give the cats wet food in the morning and leave the dry later for them to nibble on the rest of the day. We've been giving them Fancy Feast, which they love, but I'm definitely going to check out the more nutritious brands in the pet food stores.

No, not exactly. It is defiantly not recommended to feed any ground meat from the store because of possible contamination.

When we say raw, there are commercial raw foods which would be recommended if you are new to feeding raw.  Otherwise, it's a lot to figure out w/ what/how much supplements

they need etc... There are members on this site who do make their own, so have that part all figured out. For me, it was more affordable to do commercial. I feed my kitty Bravo complete patties.

The complete means it already has the nutrients in it. All commercial raw does not necessarily. I still buy a few cans of by nature, or Before the Grain, just in case I forget to thaw out a pattie the night before. Also to offer another flavor approx. once/wk. Until I can afford, or have more freezer space for two different boxes of flavors.

Yes, that's why I like  by nature, & Before the Grain. They are both 95% & 96%. (& not by- products)

I also prefer them because even though there are some other good, healthy brands out there, be sure to read the ingredients.

Many others have a lot of veggies & fruit added as well, & I learned the hard way, it was not a good thing. (they are carnivores after all) Angel got diarrhea from those. They don't need all of that stuff.

Also, too many ingredients will make it hard to figure out if they have a reaction to the food. You can't be sure as to which ingredient is causing it.

Good luck & Keep us posted.

Hi Sarah!  I see you are from the UK!  Welome!  The general concensus is that wet food is the preferred diet of our kitty friends.  Mine are on a 90% wet to 10% dry kibble diet.  Is it Whiskas or is there a brand in the UK called Whiskers?  Kibble is carb and calorie dense so an all kibble diet can lead to all kinds of issues in some cats, especially if they are not drinking enough water.  Sometimes all wet diet is not possible so some feed a mix of wet and dry.  Some feed all wet.  But most of us agree the more wet in the diet the better.  Good luck in your search but the best rule of thumb is to get the most nutrition for your budget.

hi mike ...

thank you .. whiskers is a brand in the uk .. jingles really enjoys it , its the only one he will sort of purr & meow while eating you know that sort of nom nom nom sound they make when they enjoy something ??

he will eat other food but seems like he doesnt enjoy it like he enjoys whiskers !!

i leave water down all the time .. i have to change his water lots of times during the day as he seems to like it cold ..

i feed him wet food in the morning .. then leave dry food down for him the rest of the day ...

i think because he enjoys whiskers i will keep him on that , thanks for the info , i do appreciate it :D x x x

Whiskers isn't a food l feed mine on because there's too many animal parts in it.

I feed mine Bozita that l buy online from Zooplus, so have a look on there because it's a good quality food and really reasonable
