The importance of sealed bags

I usually buy my kitten standard bags of dry kitten food, which usually come in 400g quantities. I'm sure most of us are familiar with them, they can be found in every store, and this is about every store.

Today I noticed that the same labels of dry food is only half  the price per 100g, if you buy it by the hundred grams. I found this to be most puzzling, since usually, if you buy the bigger quantity it should be cheaper than buying it by piece. Let's say, if you buy a batch of Coke bottles, you'll end up saving money as opposed to buying each bottle in turn, right?

So I asked the vendor why is it actually cheaper to buy it by the hundred grams instead of the whole package, and she answered me: "Because sealed bags preserve the dry food much better." I was like, "Ok, this makes sense, but really, is it worth doubling the price over it?"

So I'm asking the same question here. Is the price increase really justified, or was she just giving me a standard answer to account for them buying a very large quantity of food at a cheaper price, then seeling it in store for the same cheaper price?

It's a bit convoluted, hope I made sense. :)

ETA: I don't feed her dry food exclusively, please don't go into that here. :)

Do you mean the 100 gram bags are loose bags taken from a bulk container? If so, yes, it's much cheaper for them to take food out of a larger bag. The pet shop is charged more for the 400 gram bags so they have to charge the customers more for them, too.

As to whether you want to buy the 100 gram bags, that would depend on how fast you use it, when they opened the bulk container, and how much you trust them to have handled it properly.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Sorry, English is not my first language and I had no idea how to express this properly. :)

Thank you for your answer, I suspected that as well.

Hmm, did not know this. We don't have any dry food in bulk containers at any of my stores here in Canada, as far as I know. I agree with Willowy, it all depends on how fast you will use the dry food and how you trust them to handle the food properly. ;)

I buy my dry food 20kg at a time in 5 x 4kg bags.  The bags are meant to be sealable but I don't find that works well so when I open a bag I decant it into three large plastic tugs with plastic snap-on lids.  It keeps it's scent far better than in an opened bag.

I have four cats, two kittens which are 7 1/2 months and two adults 5 1/2 years and they all get the same dry food.
