We're in the Sandy storm now.  I was sitting on the sofa, and thought I heard dripping. I thought I was imagining it--how could the roof be leaking into the 1st storey of a 2-storey house? Well, guess what? It (or something else) is!  I can't figure out where the leak is coming from. There is NO plumbing on that side; that's all the way opposite from that room.  We've have a crack there for over a year (after putting in a new ceiling, BTW), but now, it's gotten far larger, and is dripping. DH looked at the room above; he can't find the source, but I don't think he really looked very well.

Has anyone ever had this happen before, and can you suggest where the water is coming from? Thanks.

In your situation I would call a roofer for advice without delay.

I agree about calling a professional roofer. A leak doesn't necessarily show right underneath where it started from. From what I undestand it can travel, so it will take a professional. Make sure you find someone with good credentials and recommendations. Good luck!

We had the same thing happen, with water dripping from the downstairs ceiling in a two-storey house. Your leak could have originated anywhere (from roof, rain, or plumbing) because water will always travel to the lowest point in the ceiling and that's where you see it dripping. The leak could be on the other side of your house. The best you can do is collect the water now and when the weather is better look for lose shingles (if you have them) or any types of holes under your roofing. You can get the entire roof covered in plastic until it can be fixed. Good luck in the storm!

p.s. Our problem was fixed with a new roof.
