I live on Molokai, Hawaii and a few years ago  I took in a stray cat that had obviously been starving.  Now, he’s incredibly healthy but overweight.  As is often the case with ferals and strays that have been starved for food, they can’t seem to loose the instinct to eat as much as possible because tomorrow, and the next day, they might go without.   Even though I feed him short rations, he always manages to eat the other cats’ food, supplements with night hunting, or beguils me into feeding him too much.   Any ideas on a successful way to trim down an overweight, but physically active male cat?

My Matt was a stray before the shelter got him, and i got him from the shelter....4lbs underweight. I had no problem getting him up to weight...and over lol

I don't know if you can stop him from hunting, but you can be stern when he plays cute for more food......those sad eyes cat be torturous I know, and my guy paws and scratches at the food box as though he's starving(2 hours after I fed him)lol.......but it's worth it when you notice the weight loss

I only have the one cat, so I can't make any suggestion about him eating the other cats' food, sorry

Cats shouldn't have their food left out for them all day, so to help with him eating the other cats' food, pick it up. They should have their meals relatively at the same time everyday, and when they walk away from it, you can pick it up.

That alone should help with him eating the others' food. Unless he's pushing them away to eat it, then that would be another problem lol.

feed them at the same exact time, so he wont be able to steal form other cats. or place them in different areas. there are even enclosed boxes used to separate cats during feeding time.

i was going to buy it for my cat, to keep the dog away from her plate, but now i just make her eat on top of a counter.
