Clavamox or not?

My 14 y.o. cat is going through hell (and so am I). After pawing at her mouth, she has been to the Vet three different times to have most of her teeth removed. The first was done about 4 months ago. Two weeks ago, her appetite was fine but continued pawing at her mouth brought us back. At that time, 4 teeth were removed. A Convenia shot was given. One week later, after pawing and loss of appetite, the Vet found a tooth fragment which was removed. Clavamox was prescribed. The day after, the cat developed diarrhea and lost  her appetite. Of course this happened on Friday as the Vet would not be back until Monday.

After some research, I read that Clavamox can cause diarrhea and loss of appetite. I reluctantly stopped the Clavamox after the Friday evening (3rd) dose. The cat ate somewhat yesterday and diarrhea seemed to slow down. Today, the diarrhea continues and the cat eats a little and walks away. I can tell she is hungry but seems to be experiencing pain after a few bites and the pawing continues. I have tried baby food, scrambled eggs, and cat food pate. She eats a little and stops. I was able to give her some bacon and a few bits of turkey.

We are debating if to resume the Clavamox or wait until Monday to talk with the Vet. I understand the Convenia last for 14 days. It was day 7 after the Convenia that the Clavamox treatment started.

Thank you for any advice.

I am not the most seasoned cat person when it comes to this stuff but here's what I can tell you/what I think and maybe someone else will chime in soon.

Clavamox is used to treat mouth wounds, infections, ect. and considering she just had her tooth out and has been having ongoing mouth problems my best guess is her loss of appetite is coming from the pain from eating, not the drug itself, since she has only had 3 doses so far... I have a kitten who is also on Clavamox at the moment and it has been helping her a lot, she was barely eating when I first got her because of sores in her mouth and now her appetite has increased tenfold because it doesn't hurt her nearly as much to do it anymore.

I think you should continue the Clavamox for now and continue offering food regularly, just watch her closely and if you are still worried and want to get in contact with a vet before tomorrow call a local emergency vet and just tell them what's going on and ask what they think you should do, but otherwise I would continue per your vets instructions for now so the Clava has more time to take effect and help what's going on in her mouth/ease the pain, which should hopefully bring her appetite back soon.

She might need some pain relief while her mouth heals, and the antibiotics clear any infection.  I would ring the vet first thing tomorrow if she was my cat.

I really don't know why clavamox was given for this..... it is not the best antibiotic for those cases :( Clindamycin is a much safer and better choice for teeth related issues..... Clavamox is known to break havoc on kitties digestive systems, causing nausea, lack of appetite and diarrhea. I had plenty of dentals done having a cat with stomatitis, and never once I had Clavamox prescribed for it. It is just not a good dental antibiotic.....
I would definitely call the vet to discuss..... By the way, Clindamycin can be given by injections, which is way better if she is having diarrhea - this is what I used to do with my Bugsy, instead of giving it orally. It is a sub Q injection and very easy to give. Your vet can prepare the syringes for you to give it at home - to hard to do at all, and will help to prevent stomach upsets (helped Bugsy a whole bunch, he has IBD, and he had no trouble with the injections).

Good Luck!!:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I spoke to the Vet and she agreed about discontinuing the Clavamox. The cat was prescribed pain medicine in the form of Pet Tinic with Buprenex as well as a different antibiotic called Orbax. We just administered the pain med and are to start on the antibiotic tonight. I will post (hopeful) progress later.

Thank you to all that responded.

Hi,

Just found this thread as my cat ws given Clavamox today (after an incision wound split open again....)

He also had two teeth removed about 2 1/2 weeks ago and was given Clindamycin at the time (as that is the antibiotic of choice for dental issues). He was doing just fine with that - I just hope he'll go as well on the Clavamox....I am a big worrier!!

So anyway, I was wondering how it went for your cat? Did she do ok on her new meds, and how is her mouth nowadays??

Hope she's all better!!

Greetings from Maryland,

Kat

Hello,

With all these talks I'm afraid to give Clavamox to my cat. Is his mouth going to be bad anyways or only in case of tooth removal?

Thank you

Pavel, I don't understand your question.... Is your cat getting clavamox because of a dental?
My cats don't get antibiotics after dental anymore, even when they have extractions. The only case they have antibiotics after a dental is if The dentist finds a bad infection; so far it hasn't happened. Quite a few dentals and extractions here, no antibiotics and perfect recovery.
