Over the river and through the woods...
We're in the process of tying things down and putting things away in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Although, now it looks like we're only going to be on the outside edge of everything...but with these things, who knows?

We've got plenty of bottled water, jugs of water for the animals and cleaning up (if the power goes out, our well pump goes out), animal and human food, candles, batteries, propane for the grill, generator tuned up and cars gassed up. What do you do to prepare for a storm?

Not as much as usual for this storm. We knew we were not going to take the main hit. When it is know they are slamming into the southern coast, we move everything off the porches. Hubby anchors the outside posts of the lean to against his boat building by tying a rope to them and attaching the other end to a vehicle. He gets plenty of gas for the generator. I hit the grocery store a day or two ahead and get some foods that are non perishable so we have plenty of snacks, fruit, etc. We always have bottled water on hand in case of flooding and we get told not to drink the county water. I usually cook up some extra food. Our generator will power the wall sockets, lights and ceiling fans. I have several appliances I can plug in to reheat and also the COFFEE POT. l am mean when I can't get my coffee.

I judge how bad a storm's going to be here against Isabel.  And Isabel was about the worst storm I've ever been through. 4 days with no power- everything in the fridge went bad, we lost 9 trees in our yard (everything went the opposite way of the house) we lost some siding.

For this one- since we're kind of on the outer edge of it- we did a little preparing.  I had food in the fridge from an eariler grocery store trip this week.  We moved a couple of things out of harm's way in the back yard.  I picked up anything I thought could be tossed around if the wind got bad.  Moved the grill to the side of the house.

There's a ton of stuff in the garage, and sometimes if we get a lot of rain it can flood.  So far nothing significant.  If it does get wet in there, the cat boxes are going to have to be moved, I don't think "the royal highnesses" would like to get their feet wet
.  Seriously though cat litter +water makes a gigantic mess and it's just easier to clean it up when it's dry.

We ususally stock up on non-perishable foods, plenty of water, make sure we have batteries for the portable radio. When Isaac was approaching a couple of months ago we put up the shutters but didn't really need them. We recently cleared a lot of shrubbery that was too close to the house and got rid of 3 giant pines that were very close. Right now we're just getting some wind here, but nothing bad. I hope everybody in the northeast is ok and that Sandy will blow away and not do any serious damage.

The next tropical storm is named "Tony". --- after our cat. If Tropical Storm Tony is anything like our Tony it'll be a real wimp!!!

Plenty of water, plenty of cat food, litter, canned stuff, etc. We brought everything that we could into the basement and tied everything else down as best we could.
