I'm in NYC-- where they are planning to suspend subway service at 7 pm tonight. Last year Irene was not as devastating as predicted. Let's hope Sandy doesn't do much damage. Good luck to everyone in her path.

My sister and I aren't too worried about it. I guess since we 'be been been through so many hurricanes her in NC, I think we 've become rather blase about them. Also we 'be found that the local forecasters always make them sound way worse than they are.
I don't know where you are in NC, but coastal NC got hit terribly last year during Irene. So far we have had rain, wind, some flooding, nothing too bad. Power went off and came right back on. Stay safe cat friends in the northern states.

Email from Verizon yesterday:

Dear Valued Verizon Customer,

In the event of extreme weather conditions associated with Hurricane Sandy, impacted areas could experience power outages which may affect your Verizon services.

If you have fiber-based voice service or FiOS[emoji]174[/emoji] Digital Voice, the Battery Backup Unit (BBU) installed with your service supplies up to eight (8) hours of phone service. Please note that your FiOS[emoji]174[/emoji] TV and/or Internet service will not be available until your power is restored.

For up-to-date information throughout the storm, please visit verizon.com/outage.

You can also visit verizon.com/repair for troubleshooting tips, instructions on how to restore your service, and open a trouble ticket if needed. Once commercial power is restored after an outage, sometimes resetting your BBU is necessary. You can learn how to reset your BBU now by clicking here.

Please stay safe and thank you for being a Verizon customer.

Sincerely,

Your Verizon Team

A tip from me: if you pay your bills online, and any are due in the next few days, if you have the money in your bank account to do so, you may want to pay them today. I did this yesterday, in case our pc goes down or the billers lose their power. (However, if that happens they may extend the grace period for you--I would imagine.)

They're also evacuating some of the coastal/island parts, I see on the Weather Channel. Stay safe everyone!

We are north of Buffalo, NY near Lake Ontario.  They say 65 mph winds starting tomorrow afternoon till some time Tuesday.  We have old Maples and Pines around our home....I hate this!!!!!  Stay safe everyone.  We will keep you all in our thoughts.

We're due to be hit tomorrow and early Tuesday...I'm glad to see my big old tree did it's annual leaf-dump yesterday. I worry less about it when it's bare because it doesn't catch the wind as much.

I just found out that all of the County Government offices are closed for Monday AND Tuesday, so I don't have to drive in this mess. In the over 25 years I've been in this job, I've never known them to close so far in advance--they must really think it's going to be bad. Very bad.

On the bright side: since we're having houseguests, I had already scheduled vacation days for Wed.-Fri.! I now have a full week of paid days off!  Plenty of time to clean, and get an early start on organizing the garage (I'm planning to buy a set of matching resin cabinets and shelving soon), and pack up stuff to go to the Goodwill later.

We received a recorded phone call from PP and L (Pennsylvania Power and Light) telling us that if the power should go out, we should be prepared for it to stay out for about a week or so. Got that email from Verizon, too. Our freezer is full; we barely had enough room to add some extra ice. I hope we don't lose everything.

Although all the schools are closed around here today and tomorrow, county offices and municipal offices remain open, at least for today.

We took our phone chargers to work and we're keeping them charging at all times. If the power does die, they'll remain charged for awhile.

Thinking of those of you in the storm area...

I'm just hoping that the warnings are the absolute worse case scenario (which they seem to do nowadays... certainly over here with cyclones) and that it won't be anywhere near as bad.

Pam, take care of yourself! I'll be thinking of you. We're only a few miles away, and may be in the same boat (maybe not the best expression to use here!). We have PECO, but so, far, haven't heard from them.

Chase Credit Cards sent me an email yesterday, saying that they are extending the grace period until Halloween.

For where I live, the news headlines said that it will   be the worst-case scenario for us!

Poor Leo is freaking out, and running around the house, crying!  He and his sister, Little Miss, started being scared of heavy rain since 2 summers ago.  She just huddles against a wall in the foyer, but Leo howls, and wants me to hold him like a baby.  Even though I feel bad for him, it is a little amusing to see a huge male Maine Coon (and the biggest cat of 9 in the house) acting like a little baby. Poor guy. I wish could comfort him more--and this storm hasn't even gotten bad yet.

I wish everyone in the path of this storm well.  Worried about my family in PA (near Lake Erie).  I've been through a CAT 1 hurricane and even though we are well inland from the ocean, it was unbelieveable the trees that were down, power outage, etc.  Never underestimate the power of wind, and this looks like 3 storms coming together.

Eep!

I'm in Florida, so we've already dealt with it for the most part... it still gets blustery at night, but during the day it's finally died down. Maybe now I'll be able to get sleep again, what with the wind and rain (it was raining so hard it sounded like someone was throwing gravel at my window) there was just no way to sleep with it going on!

Having grown up on the west coast, I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to big storms, because we never got this kind of weather. I'd certainly hate to have to deal with anything worse than what we got. Good luck to anyone further north!
