Good morning, I am writing to you in sheer desperation. Here's the story.
We picked up our new Siberian kitten Barney aged 9 weeks and bought him home. Although he slept for the whole 90 minute journey, he was playful upon arrival and was soon playing with all the toys (we already have a 12 month old British Shorthair house cat). We noticed Saturday morning that he wasn't eating or drinking much and very lethargic so I started syringe feeding drops of water and some Toplife cat formula milk I bought off Amazon.
By Sunday he still hadn't picked up so I called my emergency vet who said he might just be homesick, but because there had been no sickness or diarrhoea. They booked me an appointment in the normal vet for the next morning. When I took him in, I was told he was severely dehydrated and that they'd keep him in for tests. Later that day he transferred to the emergency vets on a drip for observation. He'd had blood tests done and they were ok.
Tuesday morning I was told he'd eaten well, was playful and that he could come home. He had loose bowels but they gave me some Hills ID food (easily digestible) and some Pro-Kolin to firm up the stools. I was so happy. I bought him home at lunchtime and he was very sleepy. Probably not had much rest at the vets I thought, so I let him sleep. He woke after about 40minutes ate about 4 mouthfuls of food, did a toothpastey looking poo and went back to sleep again. I called the vet at 4pm to say I was worried as he didn't seem any better. I was told to keep going with the treatment as that is what they'd be doing there anyway and only bring him in if he got worse. He stayed like that all day, sleeping having a mouthful of food, loose bowel movement and back to sleep. The whole time he was either on my chest or the electric blanket on the bed with me. I make dinner at 8pm and he was at my feet miaowing so i tried him with more food. not interested. By this point his poo is watery and dripping out of him as he's coming out of the tray. Again I call the vet at 9pm. I told them how loose the stools were and that I was very very worried. I was told that they were in the middle of a blood transfusion so it wouldn't be a good time to bring him in so to keep an eye on him for an hour or two and let them know if it got worse. I weighed him, 572g. (Apparently he'd been 500g in the hospital) I took him into the spare room and locked us in with all his provisions and stayed awake with him until about 4.30 am. I must've drifted off because I woke suddenly at 5.25. He was lying on his side, motionless and sticff looking and miaowed loudly as if in pain when I tried to pick him up. I called the vet and told them i was coming straight down. As my boyfriend drive I keep one hand on his tummy but the heartbeat was really faint. I literally thrust the cat box into the nurses hand on arrival, slightly hysterical, shouting I don't think he's breathing!!
He was put into an oxygen tank on a drip. He has been there since early Wednesday morning (it is now Saturday). He is not heavy enough for them to take a blood sample, and a stool sample has been sent off. He has been given two types of antibiotic, has started a course of Panacur and is back on the Pro-Kolin. Last night they got enough blood to do a cell count and his white cells are down. Yesterday his poo's got slightly better. He is eating well now and has ups and downs of energy levels so is having glucose supplements.
Additional information.
One of the breeders adults tested positive for Gardia yesterday (our kitten has tested negative but is on Panacur anyway)
We have another cat as I mentioned who is up to date on worming and jabs and is kept indoors. He is right as rain.
We have a hamster (no contact) and a Pygmy Hedgehog (he had 1 brief moment of contact, hedgehog doesn't go outside either)
He has only had his first set of jabs.
We have woken up with him between us in the bed.... could we have squashed him???
My question is has anyone heard of a similar case??? I would be so grateful for any help or information you may think is useful!! He has 50/50 chance of survival but that goes down every day he's sick
