There is this black cat that hangs around my apartment complex. He is so awesome and friendly. I bent down to pet him the other night and he followed me all the way to my door from the parking lot where I sat with him curled up on my lap outside for almost three hours.

1st I think this cat is a Bombay cat but I don't know for sure. He is completely black except for a little white patch on his chest and a little white on his underbelly. Also he has green eyes. So I do not know if he is a Bombay.

2nd I would love to take him inside and take care of him especially with the weather dropping dramatically for winter. He acts like he wants to come inside. I bought cat food and a litter box for him and had him inside briefly where he ate and also wandered around for awhile. The thing was, every time I shut the door he would begin to meow and hide under my coat rack until I would open the door up again. He would then proceed outside but lay on my door mat. I feel horrible leaving him outside.

What should I do?

Thanks for any input. Anything will help. Also sorry for the poor picture taking.

By the way I gave him the nickname Murphy.

You must get to know for sure, if he does have a home, but is allowed to take long walks, or if he is astray /dumped.  He is no feral!. That is for sure, althoug some male semiferales can be rather friendly to humans

Set upp messages found. Dont tell about ALL details, so only the rightful owner can describe him accurately. If YOU want to be guarded, use a cellphone with not registered, prepaid card.

As you think he may be a bombay, not just look alike, he may have a chip. Most purebreeds do have.

IF you are thining on adopting him, as I do think you are, a vet visit is in order. The vet will also check for the chip.    If you want to hold it low budget and dont pay any vet before you know for sure you can take him - the identity check is for free.   Most chips are between the shoulders, or somewhere around the neck (usually backside).  But the chip can wander, so make sure you screen off everywhere.

OK, once you decided to take him in.

Do you have own residents?  Think about some quarantine measures. (we will tell more if)

Not? Be sure he is defleased before you let him in....  There is a quick way to deflease, Capstar tablets, later follower by say Revolution.  Although the vet will surely help you with this.

Plan on neutering  him, after the vet check up.  (may be done at the same occasion if he is healthy)

If you want him to be your in- out cat, or your inside only cat?

Anyway, plan on taking  him in, if such is your wish, if you dont find his owner.

If you after all dont want to take him in, please try to find him someone who wants, among your networks.  Or even a good shelter.

Such a friendly cat will surely be a nice home pet.   EVEN if he after all, is "just" a friendly semi-ferale...

Good luck!
