My cat has been having episodes of drooling over the past two weeks. Any ideas on what this would be about? I looked in his mouth and his gums are a little red. He has a bit of plaque on his rear molars (are they called molars on cats). I was thinking its an oral issue....
A friend of mind put his cat down because it had oral cancer that began with abscesses in his mouth.
Why would a cat drool?

Dental issues are a common cause, but nausea or ingestion of something toxic may also result in drooling. Some cats drool when they're happy and purring, but you probably would have noticed that behaviour by now (doesn't tend to appear suddenly). It'd be a really good idea to make a vet appointment ASAP and get your kitty looked at. He could be in pain.

Well I KNOW that he hasn't gotten into anything toxic... my daughter is special needs and the house has been safetied accordingly. He is a strictly inside cat and he hasn't escaped outside at all.
Every time he does it he IS purring. Maybe he has done it before and I didn't notice...? Weird.
I made an appointment for a dental cleaning (he's never had one before) and they can evaluate his dental health from there. The appointments not until the 16th of Nov. but it's the earliest I can get in and it's with a vet I trust.

That's great that you got the appt. because drooling is a common symptom of dental disease.  Interestingly, I've read that purring can be a way cats cope with pain.  Hopefully he is not in pain though.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
 That's the best course of action at this point. Cats, just like people, can have problems in their teeth and gums we can't see.

We have a kitty that purrs when he's nervous, so I'm certain they purr for all kinds of reasons.
