I have a 8 week old kitten who was placed on clavamox for a uri. My bella was only pooping 1-2 times a day and since she was started on Clavamox yesterday she has had diahrrea 3 times just today. I know diahrrea is a side effect but I just want to know if this is considered "severe"and if i should be consulting the vet. she is drinking more water then ever before! and all her food.

Clavamox is pretty infamous for causing diarrhea easily.   Is the diarrhea very liquid?   If it continues tomorrow, yes I would call the vet.   There are other antibiotics your kitten can take and there are probiotics like Fortiflora that you can put in her food to help restore her gut back to working order which you'll want to do in any case.   Also feeding her only canned food (if not already) well help her hydration too.   Good luck!

The same thing happened to Cindy, she was having accidents all over on that stuff.  And not eating, and just generally not feeling well.  I think I gave her 2 doses, then called the vet and got something in pill which she can tolerate.  I can't remember the name of the pill, but I would call the vet and have them prescribe something different.

Same experience here - and stinky too!

If she will eat plain yogurt with active culture (probably not) - that would help replace the good bacteria balance in her gut.  A tiny (maybe start with a tsp.) plain canned pumpkin or baby rice cereal will help firm up the stools while she's on the antibiotics.  My cats will eat either by itself and seem to love the pumpkin.

Put her on a probiotic and watch her appetite carefully. If the diarrhea gets worst, call the vet. You can also give her plain pedialyte. Clavamox is a "no" in my house due to a very severe reaction I had with one of my cats (he has IBD, so it was MUCH more severe than in a regular cat). It is known to give diarrhea, and sometimes vomit too.

Carolina what probiotic do you use?  One of my kitties has been on and off of antibiotics since I got him, and I can't even mix the yogurt in his food he hates it so much.  I've heard of something called Prozyme, but have never used these on kitties.  Thanks!

In case Carolina isn't available right now, I'll answer that basically any probiotic will do, but we use Prozyme in our house, and I know Carolina used to use it, might still
.  LDG uses the same one for her kitties that she and her husband take.

Prozyme is actually a digestive enzyme product, not probiotics (the name is kinda confusing, I know). The probiotics I like to use are Natural Factor's Ultimate Multi, but there are many other similar products out there. Check out the refrigerator section at a human health food store (doesn't have to be specifically for animals) and find something with multiple strains and fairly high potency (CFUs in the billions). Because your kitten is so young, I wouldn't give more than approximately 1-2 billion CFUs per dose, but you can give that 2 or 3 times a day if needed. Just make sure it's either 2 hours before or 2 hours after the antibiotics are administered.

Ok, thank's so much, I know this isn't my thread so I appologize if I'm asking too many ?s,  but do you give the probiotics  just during the antibiotics or all the time?  And what about the prozyme, should that be given all the time or for a specific reason?  (right now all 3 are on high quality canned food and are allowed free access to grain free chicken kibble)    Should he be on both?  The vet now wants to put him on Zithromax while we are waiting for the PCR test results.   His test is on Monday.

Fortiflora is a probiotic product the vet provides in a dried liver base - it works and my cats love it!    It's too expensive to buy all the time, but for one antibiotic course it's worth it - I usually give it for a few days after the antibiotics are finished to set things right.

Fortiflora is a probiotic (weak IMHO) but it is not on a liver base, it is on Animal Digest base - yes, Cats do love that, but it is not the best ingredients of them all, IMHO.

This is the one Laurie and all use: Natural Factors Probiotics

Since all my kitties are on raw, they take it every day..... It is up to you if you want to give all the time or not - there is a study linking probiotics and immune-system. You have to give specially after the antibiotics are done, so it helps to rebuild the gut flora the antibiotic destroyed.

I personally take probiotics daily...... It is one of those things that only help and won't hurt.
