My cats shots were four months over due. She got a cold and the vet said it was because her shots were not up todate. Is this true?

No. A cold is a cold, just like in humans. There's no vaccine for that (well, OK, there is a vaccine for certain strains of the herpes virus, which causes cat colds. But only for a very few strains).
