I'm a flat broke collage student.....so vet is kinda out of the question at the moment.....especially since the only vet in my town charges you up the wazoo for even minor things.(Once got a $700 vet bill for a dog that died a day later) So my cat had been missing for 3 weeks when she finally returned she was sick, yay(Sarcastic yay....I am not enthusiastic at all B| ) any way she has a runny nose and wont eat but she will drink water and the special cat milk i buy for her as a treat(99cents YEAH), I got her to eat a tiny bit of tuna but she is having a hard time breathing. I've had cats before and so I can recognize when they have an upper respiratory infection.(I used to get them often too so i know what a sinus infection etc.. looks like)...I read up on MANY articles and found that it is best to use Fish-mox....which is Amoxicillin, I am very familiar with this antibiotic. So I went to go look for this product and then found that all animal supplies stores in the surrounding county do not carry Fish-Mox, I'd order it online buuuuut I need it like right now.....are there any other alternatives to Fish-Mox, please people I'm at my whits end and I have to choose between either of us eating this month, or take her to the vet witch will leave me flat broker and in debt.....Also I have no car so...yea no trips to out of town vets :/ and they wont let cats on the bus I've already tried. I need and alternate to Fish-Mox and also some home remedies to help with the symptoms.

I would not recommend fishmox as it is high on salt (bad for cats) and the medicine dosage is very low. I don't think you will find anything like it over the counter and I would be very careful as some human 'alternative' drugs may actualy make your kitty worse, and cause other problems with liver, kidneys... etc... even if you did get the meds... you would need to know how much to give her and how often.

I feel bad for your situation, but I don't think there is much more you could do besides take it to a vet... have you tried or considered calling your local shelter? They generally have in house vets and they are generally willing to cut you a break depending on your situation.

Good luck... and I really hope you're able to get your kitty the medical attention it needs!

URIs are viruses, not bacterial infections, generally.... so since she is not eating, amoxicillin might do more harm than good, as it can give her nausea on the top of it. Amoxicillin will not kill viruses, only bacteria.
What you need to do is to warm up her food for her so she can smell it.....
Run the hot shower in the bathroom so you get a good amount of steam going.... take her in there, hold her on your lap and stay a while. This will help her to breathe better. A vaporizer will help also.
L-Lysine, purchased from the pharmacy, will help to break the virus cycle - give her 500mg in the am, and 500mg in the pm.
If she doesn't eat, you have to force feed her with a syringe - you probably should start doing this now, since she has been gone for 3 weeks, and you don't know how long she hasn't eaten for. Cats HAVE to eat, otherwise they can get very sick, and their livers can fail.
Get some feeding syringes from the pet store, blend some wet cat food in the food processor and feed her - small feedings, several times a day. Feed about 1oz at a time, 5 times a day or so. She needs to eat enough to sustain herself, the same amount she would eat normally, until she starts eating on her own. Do NOT leave the eating up to her, this is very very important.
If you absolutely, 100% believe you have to give fish mox, try Amazon next day delivery. I would not do that. Fish mox is amoxicillin, and I have had serious side effects from that antibiotic - I would NOT use for a bacterial infection if I could avoid AT ALL, let alone for a virus.
My cats have had many URIs, and have never been on antibiotics for it.

Actually..... Fish Mox is pure Amoxicillin 250 and Fish Mox Forte 500mg. But Amoxicillin can have some serious side effects, and do not work on viruses. The dosages is not low. It is the same as given to cats.

Yeah, my cats have never needed antibiotics for a "cold" either. If they aren't eating, I force-feed turkey baby food or watered-down Fancy Feast Kitten, if they aren't drinking I force homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (Google for the recipe) with a large plastic medicine dropper (sold for giving medication to human babies). I usually don't have to force food and fluids for longer than 2 days. Sometimes they just need a little "jumpstart" to sttart eating again :).

Lysine helps, too. I'm pretty sure Walmart has it for cheap. Tablets, not powder, but you can give the tabelet as-is or crush it into her food/water.

Sure, if she likes eggs. You can give yolks raw, but if you feed the whites they should be cooked.

Shredded chicken might tempt her taste buds, too. If you can coax her into eating anything it would be better than force-feeding.

Cooked egg whites..... raw egg yolks.....
Baby food - the pure meat ones, (no onions, no garlic 100% meat).
Do you have chicken in your house? Lightly boil some chicken and try to give it to her, still warm, and see if she will eat..... Some kitties love deli meats - deli meats can be given only once or twice, because of the sodium levels, but.....
If you buy food from the vet, buy canned Hills A/D - it is perfect to feed via syringe.
From the pet store, buy fancy feast - kitties love it - it is often called kitty crack for a reason ;)

Only the raw yolk. No raw egg white which contains avadin and that interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins.

Good idea to wash the eggshell before cracking if you are feeding raw egg.

Some supermarkets sell pasturized eggs in the shell - still not cooked, more expensive, but no worry about salmonella

What cat vitamins did you give her? did you give her with a syringe?
Don't aim on the back of her mouth. Always at the sides of her mouth, slowly, or at the roof of her mouth, so she licks at it and swallows it, without aspirating it.

Canned tuna has a lot of salt. . .but it's a good sign that she ate some on her own! I think she'll be OK. Pick up a few cans of Fancy Feast in her favorite flavors and see if that helps.

It's called Liqui Tinic 4x
it was given to me by my old vet before i moved its for cats and dogs, I use it on them when they are sick to give them a boost if they aren't eating, and it comes with an eye dropper on the top to measure and administer it

Ok.... Just make sure you give it slowly aiming on the sides of her mouth. never on the back. On the tongue, roof, or sides - ok. Back, never. For anything you are feeding or giving with a dropper or a syringe - she will be fine :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
Just make absolutely sure she eats - this will make all the difference.....
Lysine will help a bunch. It is sold in any health store

So........how does one administer lysine? Just curious I've never heard of this....
I buy on powder, but they have it in capsules, tablets, gel or treats.
Powder - mix on the wet food and serve - same with capsules: open the capsules and mix the contents in the wet food.
Crush the tablets and mix in the food.
Gel (for pets, purchased from vets or sites such amazon), can be fed by itself, or mixed into the food. Treats, are fed as treats.

During a cold, the dosage is 1g per day, in two doses - one in the am, and 1 in the pm.

Lysine breaks the cycle of the herpes virus, which is generally the cause for cat URIs.......

Ohhhhh ok then I think I'll try for the gel since she still wont eat
The powder and the capsules have no taste and might be easier to feed...... Just a thought.....
Anyways, gotta go to bed - good luck and keep going.
And please, PLEASE, DO feed your kitty, no matter what :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
