Well you just registered and posted, yould should be around for this thread, if you dont reply I will email you.

First and foremost take your cat to the vet, she is due for her 1 year checkup anyways, unless she just ballooned the doctor should have evaluated this at spay/neuter surgery.

My own opinion, if its natural kitty tubbyness, limit diet to 150 calories max.  My previous vet at a cat only hospital recommended that and my two slender cats were filled out, not what you consider obese.

My cat eats only wet, and that is always recommended.

But she is a bengal and they don't put on weight the same way.

Go to the doctor, then head to a pet store and buy cases of wet food.

:nono:
You don't want to go cutting off calories like that without any information on the kitty - if this kitty is eating 450 - 500 cal, which can easily be the case by free-feeding dry food, cutting it to 150cal/day can put it in danger of hepatic lipidosis quickly. You don't cut too much too fast :nono:

To the OP - How old is the kitty, what is she eating, and how much?
Does she eat any wet?

Does she eat on a schedule or free fedding?

No matter what you do, remember: Weight loss in a cat has to be done slowly - very slowly.
I used to have a vet who used to tell me "you rather have a fat cat than a dead cat". And that's true - sudden, rapid weight loss in cats are dangerous, so go at it slowly and safely :wavey:

Carolina, let me clarify what I intended to convey is a subjective opinion on what I think is a good maintenance diet, and a feline only vet evaluation my cats who were not obese, but chunky (her words).

Conveniently all the quality cans I feed don't exceed that range.

But thank you for pointing out what appeared to be a recommendation.

Many years ago I cared for an orange tabby male, he was 20lbs by say 1.5 years old, I kid you not the vet I took him too said it was typical for orange tabby's, not to worry

I am curious about hepatic lipidosis I know what it is, recently, very recently my bengal;s (avatar) murmer manifested in heart failure (she is still alive).  For about 3 weeks we had to force feed her with dog syringe feeder baby food and blended wet. In the 5 days of almost know eating, she lost almost everything, all fat was gone.  She has been eating 100-200 calories on her own for the last month, and gaining her strength back.

I will get a blood panel soon.

I agree you need to gradually cut down the amount you are feeding now. It's dangerous for cats to lose weight quickly. It will go slowly but that is much safer. Wet food is much healthier, especially for an overweight cat.

You did not say if you fed her a wet or dry diet or a combination of the two.  Wet is easier for a cat to maintain weight, or lose weight on than kibble.  Kibble is carb and calorie dense.  Wet food also helps to hydrate the cat.  All that said;  whatever you are feeding, transition her calories and type of food slowly.  Quick weight loss is not good for a cat and getting a cat to transition from an all kibble diet to wet can be difficult sometimes.  Best of luck to you.  If you have more specific info and would like to PM me for more specific thoughts on the matter, please feel free to do so!
