Poor Archimedes is constipated.  We have tried giving him pumpkin (which he really likes) but it doesn't seem to be helping.  Tonight, I gave him about 1/4 cup of herbal tea that contains senna.  What else can I try?

I second what Laurie (LDG) said about the tea with senna. Do not give this to your kitty. Also, there are very few herbs (including in teas) that are safe for kitties.

How much pumpkin are you giving and how often? When did you start giving it to him?

What does he eat? What brand and type of food(s)? Dry/kibble or canned?

How old is Archimedes? Does he have any health issues?

It would be helpful to know the above so we can give more informed answers.

I have a 14 year old kitty with chronic constipation (all his life). He has done well the last few years on mostly canned food, supplemented with some high fiber Hill's W/D dry for snacking, and 1/2 teaspoon Metamucil mixed in his canned food twice a day. He prefers to drink running water so I got him a fountain to increase his water consumption. I have lactulose (prescribed by the vet) to give as needed but rarely have to use it (maybe twice a year). Lactulose is a syrupy liquid laxative.

I have always fed dry food but never had a problem (my cats have always drank water fine) until I started feeding Mia Evo Cat and Kitten food. After a couple weeks she was so backed up she had to be seen by the vet.

After changing her back to her original diet, the problem solved itself. Has there been a change in diet?

Hi Everyone. I just signed up because my 8 year old male cat has not gone poop for 3 days but is eating up a storm. Very little pee. This is very unusual. He seems happy and active. When should I get worried? I was thinking of buying pumpkin. He is about 10 lbs. How much/how often should I give it to him?

3 days? Go to the pharmacy and get some Miralax. Give 1/4 TSP in the morning. If he doesn't poop you can give another dose at night. If he doesn't poop very soon, call the vet.

Canned pumpkin: 100% plain, unsweetened/pure pumpkin: 1TBSP (3TSP) per day, divided in 2-3 doses throughout the day, mixed in the wet food, or given with a spoon.....

Caroline...SUCCESS!
I started mixing apple cider vinegar @ 5:1 ration last night and mixed it in his food. 12 hours later a nice poop!

I will go get pumpkin puree for preventative measures.

Thanks Again,

Serry
