This past Sunday, I noticed that our cat had something on the top of his head.  I thought at first perhaps it was a knot of fur. He's a short hair, but somewhat longer fur than most short hairs, so he does occasionally get those.  We had just cleaned the house so decided to wait to brush him out.

Yesterday, I felt it again and decided I'd better give him a good brushing.  Luckily, he's a good sport about that, to the point of flumping down and nearly drooling while I brush him lol.  At some point, I decided to put him in my lap to have a look at what was on his head; he quietly growled at me as I touched it.  It was then I noticed it was actually a cut on the top of his skull.

How he got this is beyond me.  He's an indoor solo cat.  And lazy as can be.  He gets into nothing around our home to cause him trouble. there aren't any sharp edges to any furniture.

Could he have done this to himself?  Have any ideas what may have caused this such as diseases or pests that I should look for?  He's never even had so much as a flea since we've had him.

It doesn't appear to be infected at all - just some of the fur missing, I can see his skin but you don't notice it looking at him - you really need to look for it.  I guess what I felt was it scabbing over already.  And when I brushed over it that didn't appear to bother him, it was just when I touched it with my hands but, that could have just been him being cranky and voicing his displeasure for the moment :p

Thanks!

Poor muffin, I wonder what happened? I've noticed random scabs on my cats from time to time, but they do scrap sometimes and I'm pretty sure that's what's causing them. But your cat is obviously not getting into fights. Is he otherwise acting normally, not in pain at all? It concerns me that it sounds painful when you touched it.

He seems ok to us, yes.  We got home from work yesterday and he was all lovey dovey as usual. And, he did let me give him that long brush out, no problem.  Eating fine, bathroom fine.  And no contact with other animals possible (he's totally indoors).  When I lightly pet his head, he's ok with that, but it was when I went to inspect it that he gave that light growl at me.  And, he is so not that type of kitty.  He puts up with massive amounts of man-handling from us
I mean, he's probably one of the most people friendly cats I've ever encountered.

It's a mystery for sure.  The only possible thing I can think of, now that I think of it, was he did get into the basement momentarily a few days ago.  He is not allowed down there, as it's unfinished, and potentially somewhat dangerous in spots for him.  My BF was doing laundry and left the door open a crack - usually he's very careful about that.  He noticed him rather quickly, but maybe he managed to brush up onto something in that very short amount of time.  Even the stairs aren't the best in the world (house is nearly 100 years old!).

I think if it's still the way it is by the weekend I'll take him to the vet.  May as well have him take a look if it still seems like it's annoying him at that point.
