I haven't been owned by a cat for 14 years and am going to picking up my cat from the local shelter this week and am very confused about how much and what to feed her. She is an adult cat,3-5 years old.  It was suggested to try her on Wellness Core dry food only but they only sell it in 5 lb. bags which is $30 at my local pet store,if she doesn't like that, that is quite alot to put out.  I've done a ton of research on cat food, cat care and everything over the last year to get myself back up to speed.  I do want to feed her wet and dry so decided to try her with the wet food, chose two types for her to try but need to get the dry food before Wednesday.  I was thinking of getting the reg. Wellness as I can buy it in a smaller bag for about $18.  I'm excited to be finally having a cat in my house again but worried I will be feeding her too much/not enough or the wrong type of food for her, looking for suggestions, please.  I have been reading some of the posts on here, too. I fed my past cat store brand foods and then switched him to Iams cat food as he grew older and he lived to be almost 15,had to be put to sleep due to cancer.

Thank you for any help,

Tammy

You could start her with the food she is used to at the shelter and gradually mix in Wellness,so her stomach doesn't get upset. The Wellness Core also comes in 2 lb. bags. Maybe you can find it at another store. Having said that, my suggestion would be to feed her wet food only. Grain free, without corn or other uneccesary fillers. About 4-6 ounces a day,and adjust according to her weight. Congratulations on the new kitty !

thank you for the information. A full can sounds like alot of food, and is $2 with tax here, but will see how much she eats as she is a smaller cat, will see if the vet thinks she needs to gain weight or not. She is getting Natural Balance right now and they will give me some for her to take with me but we plan to try Wellness as that is what they suggested.  The two close pet stores only have the 5 lb. bags of Core so think i will try the normal Wellness as it comes in 2 lb. bags, see if she likes that, then either go to the core or see what the vet suggests when I take her next week.  I'm beginning to get excited and hope to be able to bring her home Wed. afternoon if she has been spayed.:)
