Matt has what look like pimples along his lower lip, and i can't get him to the vet because its the weekend, and hubby works all week.  now don't get me wrong, if it were an emergency, I'd find a clinic, but my vet is a 25min drive.....is there anything I can do until hubby can drive me out, or even better to heal it without a vet?

I've heard that plastic dishes can cause acne in cats. I would take him to the vet on Monday in case it's something else. In the meantime take away any plastic dishes if that's what he uses. See if it gets any better.

I have a cat that had the same issues. We figured out for her it was probably a combo of things: one being the plastic dish we fed our cats the dry food from, the other she seemed to have an allergy to fixed meat foods. If we feed her only white meat chicken based food or fish based she does a great deal better.

My advice:

A) use stainless steel bowls for dry and wet food along with water.

B) wash the bowls daily. Personally I never really thought of washing the dry food bowl on a regular basis until the problem happened. Now I wash it every other day at the least.

C) they are just like pimples. Once they 'pop' a little triple antibiotic onitment on them will help them heal faster.

Just keep an eye on them. If they don't look better in a week, I would think about the vet then.

 Glass or stainless steel bowls. I use glass.

Sometimes it's a food allergy...

Flowerbelle got acne from eating some food out of a plastic bag ( ) a few months ago. I keep colloidal silver in the house (500ppm) for cuts, bites, and scratches. I figured... let's see. I soaked a cotton ball and dabbed it on her acne a couple of times the day I noticed it. It was gone the next day.

It depends on the glaze. Technically the glaze on ceramic IS glass. But it can crack, or develop small cracks. We actually discussed this a while back, so I took a picture of one of our plates to illustrate. Sorry for the glare, but you can see what I mean.

But this is why I use glass, rather than ceramic.

I don't have time tonight to read the responses you've gotten so far but I'll go ahead and add mine.  One of my cats developed feline acne.  I got her to the vet and was told that the plastic bowls I was using could harbor bacteria no matter how clean I kept them and the advice was to go with stainless, glazed ceramic or glass bowls.  I got new bowls, cleaned her chin and have not had a problem since and it's been 13 years

My cats have never had a problem with acne, but I do use stainless bowls and put them through the dishwasher which washes hotter than I can, and rinses properly.  There is also no danger of them breaking if dropped.

The only problem is being light that they can be pushed around so now they are on a 'thing' that came from Ikea to go on a desktop which stops them sliding around.

hmm i was abut to say that his bowls are all either stainless or glass...but then I remembered he has a couple of melamine dishes from the dollar store..i'll pitch them. I showed his chin to the vet when he was in in august, but they weren't concerned, and it cleared up after i washed his chin with a little peroxide mixed into a cup of water.

Can you name a triple antibiotic for me? is it something I get from the vet or the pharmacy?

what types of foods could touch off an allergy? he's eaten wellness and weruva canned this week and those are new...but they're also supposed to be better than california natural??

Well, if it is an allergy, the quality of the food wouldn't necessarily make a difference, the proteins in it would be. But if he has some plastic dishes, I'd go with removing them and seeing if with cleaning his chin it clears up. No need to drive yourself nuts figuring it out if it's not an allergy.

i threw out the plastic bowls, and took a look at his chin....definite improvement since last night
You mentioned silver? i think i can get that at my health store can't i, and it might be easier on his skin than peroxide? The vet said using it often could bother him, even watered down

Just my experience: My cat had acne about 2 years ago. In her case it was due to a recipe change (new & improved :lol3:) in the food she was eating. She also needed a round of antibiotics bc some of the pimples further in on her chin got infected, so be on the watch for that. Switched foods and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks for the heads up
I'm keeping an eye out for any sign of relapse and will run him straight to a vet if he does....I also put him on all one food, and all glass bowls for right now, so that I know  what he's ingesting.  I noticed his stainless bowls were getting scratched, so I think all glass may be the way to go for me. None of his pimples left his lip, so I caught it pretty early....of course he gets regular brushings, so I see his mouth often

Great you caught them so fast! Warning- gross talk ahead-in Jezzy's case the infected ones looked much like how they sound. She has long white Persian fur...and they were white puss pimples. It took me probably a week to notice the ones that were infected just Bc they blended in so well. She had 2, each about half the size of a pencil eraser. With her thick fur I felt them before I could see them! There was no black head in them, just more like a deep white pocket of nasty.
My vet said I caught hers early, and if left, those deep ones can be a serious problem.
An Internet search will give you a number of pics ranging from very mild to severe.
Wishing Matt an acne free future :D
