Hello! I've lurked about this wonderful site for a long time and finally decided to join it tonight.

I was hoping I could get some advice or see if anyone else had run into the same issue as me. For the last several months I have been feeding my cats Natural Balance canned Duck and Pea as I have an IBD kitty and it was suggested he might be allergic to chicken (I believe this has been proven not to be the case however). I have changed his diet recently but my non IBD female still wants only the Duck and Pea and won't have anything to do with his food. I actually like this arrangement as it gives me control over supplementation for the IBD and his arthritis without wondering if he actually ate it or if she did (she is a bit of a piggy).

I just ran out of NB cans and ordered another case online since no one local seems to sell it. As soon as I opened a new can I saw it was a noticeably different color than usual. It's darker and more reddish/pinkish instead of the usual beige pate I'm used to. Nothing foreign looking in it...no mold or anything. The smell didn't seem rank (anymore so than canned cat food normally does anyhow). So, I didn't think much of it and served it to her highness anyhow. She completely turned her nose up to it. Wouldn't touch it. Needless to say she's mighty hungry right now. So I opened a second can from the case to see if it was the same. It was. Darker with areas that look pink or red.

The expire dates aren't until 2015 and only a month later than the last batch I had. I didn't see any changes on the label to indicate a new formula or process. The cans looked mildly dirty but not damaged or dented. I'm not sure if I should keep putting it in front of her or not or if I should take her cue and bury it like she tried to do. I'm especially concerned knowing NB's history of recalls. I don't know if I want to risk it and then blame myself forever if something happens. :(

Is there anywhere I can take pet food to be checked for contamination? Has anyone else that uses this food noticed a change in the color? Of course the problem in the meanwhile is how to get my stubborn butted little girl to eat something else instead of just marching around the house voicing her discontent for the slop I tried to server her and the unacceptable substitutes I offered in place of her usual meal.

I really hate to have to change her diet again. She is NOT cooperative about such things. And worse yet, I risk my IBD kitty deciding he wants her food and ignoring his food which is the only food I've had even moderate success with. -_-

He already chowed down on the alternate canned food I tried to give her tonight while his dish sits untouched. Why does feeding a cat have to be so complicated?!

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome!

Thanks!!

Have you tried taking those back to the store and getting them replaced? Just make sure you get another batch..... When I fed canned and ran into any trouble that is what I did. I never had a problem with any store I ever bought.
With that said , I have an IBD kitty..... I went through all diets, treatments, everything that you can imagine. Putting him on a raw diet fixed all his IBD issues 100% immediately - as in the 1st day he ate 100% raw.
I am not the only IBD member here on TCS with the this type of result - here is a member who is transitioning right now: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/249931/new-to-raw-feeding-and-have-questions
I am only pointing this out as you say this food is the only one that is giving you even "moderate success". IMHO you don't have to settle for that - you can have a fully healthy, happy kitty.... My vet bills now are wellness bills!
Anyways, here is our raw thread if you want more information about it - you can open a thread there and we will help you out :hugs: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-feeding-for-cats

Welcome to TCS! :wavey:

Thank you for the warm welcome! ^_^

The food I'm having "moderate success" with is Honest Kitchen Prowl dehydrated raw. Until February of this year he was a kibble head. Once I got him eating canned I tried Honest Kitchen. He didn't go for it at first but now he likes it.

Since switching to this food his vomiting has stopped, his stools, while still soft, no longer have blood in them and for the first time in a year he is gaining weight instead of losing it! That is the bit that makes me cry tears of joy. He went from 10.2 pounds last August (already too small for him) down to 8.5 pounds in July of this year. Since switching foods in July he is now at 9.25 pounds. It's a small success but after years of battling and losing against his IBD I celebrate every success!

Thank you for the links and info about raw. I am actually thinking of taking the plunge. I'm wondering if I could safely try whole prey with him as it seems the most sure way of getting all necessary nutrition and balance without me playing mad scientist and hoping I'm getting the correct ratios and supplement levels. And truth be told I'm a terrible cook! LOL ^o^

I also think my finicky female would love it. She walks around the house carrying small stuffed animals (little aflac ducks handed out at a former workplace...lol) all the while moaning and carrying on. She follows me from room to room with them and drops them at my feet. She also makes little growling sounds while eating her wet food with her head at an angle and chewing vigorously. Which is funny since it's practically soup that she's eating. She seems like she would enjoy something meaty to sink her teeth into. She does have a wee bit of a feral streak!

I will create a post in the raw section this weekend as I do have some questions about the safety of raw for IBD cats.

As for the canned food scare, unfortunately I bought it online. So I'll have to email them and see about shipping it back and specify a different batch in return. It'll take a while to get that done. Hopefully I can find some canned food somewhere local to hold her. I have to wonder how someone so picky managed to get so chubby! =P

Although she has lost quite a bit of weight since getting off of the kibble. Plus I exercise her more each day now. She's not quite the butterball she once was. ^_^

You might want to contact Natural Balance then, once they sent me a free case when I had a mold issue  I look forward for your thread on the raw forum, I too used to fear for my IBD's boy safety, but today I know it was the best thing I did, and I don't have the slightest fear anymore; in fact, I do consider the safest diet of all, consider you take proper handling precautions, which are not that much of a deal at all. I will see you there! :wavey:
