I was renting a house in Pittsburgh that I was thinking of buying.

I put the litter boxes in the basement, and everything was going great.

One day I noticed a small, two pronged "bite" on my cat Butters head. It scabbed up and went away with no problem. I didn't consider it to be a big deal, after keeping an eye on it, and it disappating, didn't see much to be done after that.

A couple weeks later, my cat Kimba appeared with the same two pronged scab on the side of his head, right where Butters was. This time I kept an eye on it.

As the day went on after the discovery on Kimba's head, his fur seemed to be fluffed up a bit. I wasn't sure if I was being paranoid, so I just kept an eye on it. By nighttime, his face was swollen. I webcammed with my mom in Florida, and she said take him to the vet in the morning.

Next morning comes, I wake up, and am totally shocked. A baseball sized lump was on his face. I immediately took him to the vet.

The vet asked me if Kimba was an outdoor cat, which I replied no, because he's never been outside. He asked me if I had any other pets, to which I replied I had Butters. He said "no snakes?" Nope. He said the bite looked like "two fangs." He decided the cats must have had to have gotten in a fight, which was an answer I wasn't comfortable with, because the two cats have never even lifted a paw to one another.

Then, the vet took his temperature in the back. When he came back, they said he has a 108 degree fever. The doctor gave him an antibiotic shot, and an anti-inflammatory shot. They said Kimba's fever was dangerouly high, and could cause organ failure or recover with  brain damage.

The vet informed me that the abcess would burst in a day or two, gave Kimba the cone of shame, and I took him home.

Once Kimba was home, I went into the basement for whatever reason. When I walked up the stairs, I was confronted with a shedded snake skin. I proceeded to freak out, and call the vet. The vet said "I thought you didn't have any snakes." and to which I replied, "it was a wild snake that got in the house!" The course of action for Kimba's recovery did not change. The vet would not be able to identify what kind of snake it was.

I decided to call the Wildlife people. A man identified the snake as a 6-8 foot Black Rat Snake. They are not poisonous (which makes sense since Butters healed with not problem.) Kimba's bite seemed to get infected. The man would NOT remove the snake, aparantly the entire foundation of the house was cracked, and needed to be redone, or else the snakes would just keep coming in.

I moved the litter boxes up to the main floor, and closed the basement door once and for all.

At this point, Kimba was really suffering. He wouldn't eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. He would walk into a corner, and just stare at the ground, totally confused. I didn't think he was going to make it. I sat for hours holding him, rocking him on the rocking chair.

I decided to get him some wet food, and cats milk. When I poured the cats milk onto a dish, it happened. The abcess burst.

I've NEVER seen anything like this. It was like a dam broke- Blood and pus just POURED out. Kimba freaked out, and was running wild around the house, blood everywhere. I managed to get him, and calm him down. For the next 2 hours, I was busy cleaning the open wound, making sure it was clean and no dirt. I must have used over 200 q-tips and warm, damp towels to remove the excess blood and pus. He was moaning in pain- it was horrible.

However, from here on out, things started to get better. Kimba was coming around- eating, drinking, and FINALLY going to the bathroom.

I took him back a week later for his second round of shots. The doctor said the wound was healing, and a couple more weeks of the cone, and he would be good to go.

Luckily his organs didn't shut down. Since the bite, he isn't the smartest cat out there, but he functions well, runs around, and is a very happy cat.

Once he was healed, I moved out of the house, and stayed in a small apartment for a month before moving out of state.

I'm glad Kimba is happy and healthy again. He has a rough start to life prior, he was being terribly abused before I rescued him. Regardless, Kimba has turned out to be a great cat. I'm so lucky to have him!

I'm attaching the pic of Kimba's bite. This is on the side of his face. Second pic of him is him healed and healthy again.

Thanks for reading

I would have insisted they remove the snake, poisonous or not. There are devices that repel snakes, so even if your foundation isn't right there no reason to just have snakes living in the basement.

Glad to hear Kimba fully recovered and is doing well.

I know! I was really upset they wouldn't help. I threw mothballs down there, and never opened the basement til I moved, which was as soon as Kimba healed. I moved to NJ, live on a second floor apartment, and all is well now!

I'm glad you did not buy the house. I feel like the vet should have been more helpful, especially since Kimba was in such pain.

Generally black snakes are pretty harmless as long as you grab it behind the head you could have tossed it on your own. But the truth is with a crack to get in more would just find their way in the house or it would come back in unless you put it in a box and drove a decent ways away to drop it off or killed it. If a black snake bites you it usually hurts but as you saw for yourself unless it gets infected it will not hurt you.

This story gave me the creeps bc I live in NYC in a basement apartment that has foundation problems. Both my yorkie and I were bitten by a brown recluse here once. (Yes, we are looking for a new apartment higher up!). We moved here in June and have had ongoing problems ever since.

So glad Kimba is okay. And that is a HUGE snake. :( I would just absolutely die.

Yeah...I wasn't about to wrestle with the snake to get it out, just for the snake to come right back in. Also, to seal the foundation would be crazy expensive, and I wanted to leave Pittsburgh. I'm happy in my second floor 2 bedroom apartment! :)

I would be afraid of a rat coming out of my toilet in NYC! I don't know too much about snakes being in the city, though. But yeah, seems like you need to find yourself a better house where you're not getting bit, or having  constant issues.

I saw a brown recluse a couple weeks back at my friends house. She freaked out, and started spraying him. I asked what she was using, and she said, "enamel."

The next day, I saw the spider was dead- and sparkly gold.

Hahahaha!  That's something I would do!  Sparkly gold spiders....that's sort of awesome.  I live in area of NYC called Astoria; it's in Queens.  It's like 15 minutes from Manhattan by train and we have actual yards, trees, & parks around here.  And mice.  So I'd assume there's probably at least little garden snakes.  Other than the time a few years ago that the cobra was missing from the Bronx zoo.

You know, other than in the subway, I've never actually seen a rat here.  I have seen mice though.  Like just little house mice.  They still freak me out.  That's actually how I ended up getting the two kittens I just got a little over a week ago!

Congrats on your new apartment also!  That'll be me soon also, lol.

I remember when the cobra was missing from the Bronx zoo that would certainly freak me out.  I think they ended up finding him in a quiet corner of the building that he was always in.  I hope they figured out what went wrong with their procedures so that doesn't happen again.  Infection is always a possibility with a snake bite because of the puncture wounds and like all animals they carry germs in their mouth.  It's also a secondary problem with poisonous snake bites.

sometimes it's more the little things you need to worry about. A friend of mine was paralyzed for four months after being bit by a deer tick outside. He had to learn how to walk again and still has ongoing physical issues years later.

Anyway, glad to hear the kitty is OK. I'd be scared to tackle a big snake myself, even though I have been known to pet garter snakes and (non poisonous) snakes at zoos lol

Sorry I grew up on a farm I can't tell you how many longer than me black snakes I have had to pull out of a chicken nest and toss in the woods. I forget not everyone sees them like I do. Mostly as a harmless nuisance that wants to steal what I planned on eating for breakfast.

I must say, Kimba has healed into a stunning cat.  I love flame points.  I had one in Gainesville when I lived there.  I called him Snowstorm , nicknamed Snowy.  He ran off and probably got killed in the busy road. Hopefully, my brother will post some new pictures of his cat, Flambe (the flying feline fruitcake)

Oh wow.  I hope your friend is doing well.  One of my former yoga instructors was bitten by a tick & contracted Lyme disease.  She was afflicted pretty badly, but kept her yoga practice as best she could, even if it was seated because she also experienced some paralysis like symptoms.

OMG! What a story that is! Kimba's bite wound looks terrible! So, so happy he healed well and that he's no longer in that environment. That temp of 108 would have freaked me out. I'm really glad Butters didn't have to go through all that. Sheesh... At least the outcome was real, real good

I'm so glad that's all behind us. Finally, Kimba is able to enjoy a quiet, peaceful life that every creature deserves. Nothing puts a smile on my face faster than Kimba running around in pure joy, with not a care in the world. This is a true "happily ever after," tale!
