Hello there.  I have heard that Guafenisin is ok to give to cats in the proper dosage per pound.  My kitty gets URIs occasionally.  So he stopped coughing a couple of days ago.  He is eating, drinking water and playing.  We have children's Mucinex.  It contains Guaifenisin only and does not contain sugar or alcohol.  I have read that Robitussin DM is given to cats when they get a cold.  Is there a difference between Mucinex and Robitussin being that they both contain only Guafenisin?  And is it safe to give to him?

I would not give it to your cat.  Call your vet and ask what you can do.

Here's a short article from a reputable Veterinary site that should offer you some good info and help make for an informed decision: http://www.vetinfo.com/treating-cat-cough-guaifenesin.html

(One needs to be very careful when seeking advice/info on the Net when it comes to cat health.....these sites which appear up front in Google searches, such as e-how, JustAnswer etc etc, should NOT be trusted implicitly. IMO, e-how is to be taken as e-how-NOT to research feline health info!! Such websites pay Google for up front positioning in search results, and pay "ghost" writers for each word in their submission...yes, just like Dickens was paid.)

Perhaps we need a "sticky" here with a listing of reputable health websites........

All that said, I wouldn't be using Guaifenesin for "just" mild respiratory congestion...better to provide some humidity ("steaming" sessions, warm mist vaporizer)...and, of course, "consult your Vet..."

IF there's no other ingredient, then the only other possible difference would be the strength (concentration), which you also need to check carefully. There are now 'a million and one' varieties of "Robitussin".......IF yours is the plain-and-simple one with no other ingredient, that's the one discussed in the Vetinfo article.
